Russell H. Bready Popular Lecturer
REDPATH
Russell H. Bready Clergyman Mayor Pro Tem of Pontiac, Mich.
RUSSELL H. BREADY lectures on community building, and he brings to the platform a thorough knowledge of his subject based upon practical experience as a leader in civic affairs.
Mr. Bready is mayor pro tem of the city of Pontiac, Mich., which has a population of nearly 35,000 people and has the commission form of city government. During his term of office in Pontiac he has shown himself to be both a sane and progressive official. Mr. Bready, as mayor pro tem, has been prime mover in such activities as the establishment and conducting of a successful municipal employment bureau and the concentration of charity contributions into one large comprehensive fund. He has also been instrumental in drawing up a city charter which looks toward civic betterment in a large way, as well as relating to the usual details of sewers, paving, etc. Some time ago a recall election was held in Pontiac, and Mr. Bready received more votes than any other candidate on any ticket.
By vocation, Mr. Bready is a clergyman, and he has made a tremendous success of his church work, not only in Pontiac but in other cities where he has held pastorates. He is not only a spiritual influence but is a church executive. His church activities are thoroughly organized and successful.
He firmly believes in the Lyceum as a community builder and he conducts in Pontiac what he calls Pleasant Sunday Afternoons during the fall and winter months each year. The feature of a Pleasant Sunday Afternoon is the presentation of a Lyceum lecture or entertainment or musical attraction, only a minimum admission charge being made. Frequently 1,500 people are in attendance at one of these Afternoons. The success of this activity gives an idea of the active organization-power of the man.
Mr. Bready, as a speaker, is magnetic, forceful, eloquent, and inspiring.
On account of the many demands on his time, he is able to fill only a limited number of Lyceum engagements. Any community booking him may be sure of securing a lecturer who will give a splendid community-building address.
