JUDGE BEN B. LINDSEY
Lectures — Joint Debates
JUDGE BEN B. LINDSEY
A Blazer of New Trails
The life of Judge Ben B. Lindsey is a romance of humanitarian achievement. Under the first Juvenile court law he established his famous Juvenile Court at Denver, Colorado. It was the prototype of similar courts in America and throughout the world.
The governments of Europe have bestowed coveted honors upon him. In the records of the British Parliament there is a commendation of that great law making body in reference to his work which formed the basis of a reform in English jurisprudence.
His achievement has brought to him the allegiance of great minds all over the world.
Having won his crusade for the rights of youth, Judge Lindsey has gone on toward a consideration of all social relations, and is now agitating for a new social attitude toward marriage as embodied in his book, THE COMPANIONATE MARRIAGE.
Vast changes are occurring in our social attitudes. To cope with them we have codes formulated for an entirely different social fabric. Judge Lindsey asks us to change them in time, to meet the realities, as the only means of averting a social disaster.
In his work he is winning the support of notable personalities in every field. Ministers, educators, publicists, writers and professional men of the highest standing have given him their advocacy. Also he has met great opposition.
His book, THE REVOLT OF MODERN YOUTH, went into twelve editions and called forth probably the greatest volume of personal correspondence ever drawn out by a book published in our time.
In THE COMPANIONATE MARRIAGE Judge Lindsey presents his program for ideas that have a tremendously vital bearing on the problems of marriage today and the education of our young men and women. As every one knows his ideas are derived from the human workshop.
David Starr Jordan: One of the most weighty books of our time is Ben Lindsey's REVOLT OF MODERN YOUTH. I very strongly commend it for the reading of all parents and all teachers of youth. This includes all clergymen, for unless these reach the youth, their talk is mainly into the air.
William Allen White: It is the most liberal, intelligent and generally sane book that ever yet appeared on this important and delicate subject. It should have serious consideration. The book is an achievement in candor.
George A. Dorsey: I regard 'The Revolt of Modern Youth' as an enormously important book and one which should be read not only by every parent in the land but by every thoughtful person who has the welfare of America at heart.
George Bernard Shaw: The law that what is done cannot be undone holds valid of good as well as of evil and nothing can unmake your record.
H. G. Wells: You are doing great work, simply and adequately.
Lecture Topics
THE REVOLT OF MODERN YOUTH
Judge Lindsey's inside experiences with present day youth. This deals with the causes of delinquency, immorality, crime, et cetera, among children and youth. It is told around dramatic, humorous and tragic stories from life in his court work—beginning with the first Juvenile Court Law in this country.
LOVE, MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE
This summarizes conclusions drawn from nearly thirty years in the Juvenile, Family and Domestic Relations Court. It is humorous, episodic, and completely filled with astonishing facts and interesting conclusions.
Thomas Alvah Edison: Most people need a dose of truth and you are about the only one who is capable of administering it because you have the facts.
Havelock Ellis: I am not surprised that many of the clergy welcome your book. (I have recommended it to some who have asked my advice). They are beginning to wake up to the fact that they have got to do something about 'modern youth' and your book will be most helpful in showing them what it is they have to do.
Jane Addams: Judge Lindsey has become an international figure.
Luther Burbank: Once in a while a real book appears. It takes experience, wisdom, love and courage to be able to produce such work. It will do great good, for truth always wins at last.
Harold Bell Wright: To me your book is the most important contribution to the life of this generation, and the future of the nation. I thank you personally for this service which you have rendered.
