Associated Club Network — World's Greatest Speakers
The Dinner Call
Figure
MEMBER OF THE ASSOCIATED CLUBS
World's Largest Organization for Better Acquaintance of Local and National Leaders.
Escape from the Gestapo
(
also
Arctic Adventure
)
A strictly personal story will be given at the next club dinner—the story of Peter Freuchen, one of the world's most colorful figures. There will be no
plan
—no program for changing things—only the experiences of this giant modern Viking told in his simple yet gripping way.
When this most colorful of all Europeans escaped from German Gestapo clutches to Sweden and on to America, the Associated organization in conjunction with the Feakins Bureau organized a quick tour to take him to nearly all parts of North America and make him available for Executives clubs and Knife and Fork clubs generally. The officers of the local club grabbed him at once, so are able to present him to members as guest of the club.
So-o-o- club members at the next club dinner will have a chance to hear and meet one of the great world figures of the present day and get a personal recital of a tremendous adventure.
Entirely different from any past club dinner, we cannot imagine any member or his lady failing to enjoy every minute of Peter Freuchen's talk. Let the secretary know how many plates you want.
PETER FREUCHEN
(
Pronounced Froy-ken
)
A giant of a man 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 225 pounds, wears a full beard, has a big voice.
Escaped from the German Gestapo from Denmark to Sweden in a packing box marked
Machinery
, then flew to England and on to New York—arriving December 15, 1944.
One of the world's great men (and one of the most unique).
Cut off his own foot when frozen on an exploring expedition in Northern Greenland where he was resident governor of Thule. Married an Eskimo wife there and was ideally happy until her death, after which he took his two children back to his native Denmark.
His book
Arctic Adventure
was a
Book of the Month Club
selection when published. Received rave notices in New York Herald-Tribune, New York Times and many other periodicals. He has also written several other books including
Eskimo
, made into a motion picture by M.G.M. He was technical director and actor as well as author in this epic picture.
Has made two previous American lecture tours—has a slight accent but speaks excellent English — is easy to understand.
A genuine modern Viking telling a saga of the present days—a natural born story-teller.
The Associated Clubs, in a speaker scoop, are getting the pick of his dates—and have arranged with him and his manager for a quickly planned tour, taking him to all parts of the country.
I shall never forget the talk he gave at the Explorers Club annual dinner. It was magnificent.
— Roy Chapman Andrews.
Three of four times each year I get a thrill from a speaker (I generally hear about 150 each year). Once every two or three years I hear a speaker that I believe will make an outstanding hit in every club regardless of location, political and religious beliefs, or unusual local situation. Peter Freuchen seems to me to be such a speaker.
