The Harp Ensemble Company
The striking grace of the harp is apparent to everyone. In truth, there is scarcely an object of any kind that at all approaches the harp for beauty; and when its depth and variety of tonal possibilities are borne in mind, we cannot wonder that it has reigned for ages the noblest device for musical expression. In Babylon, in Egypt, in Persia, and in Assyria antiquarians have revealed the harp as a thing exalted by these ancient peoples. They bore it with them in the march of the race.
Many years before the Christian era it was conveyed to Ireland where it fulfilled, finally, a high peculiar purpose. For in Ireland the first missionaries used harps, that had aforetime echoed wildly in the temples of the Druids, to arouse the deeper and more fervid feeling befitting converts who had resigned heathen revenge and strife for the mercy of the Prince of Peace.
Primitive races devised the harp and preferred it because of its exceeding simplicity and its wonderful range of tone. It was easy to play upon, and it supplied a swift expression for all the emotions. For these same reasons it has never gone out of use, and it has risen into our day with all of its ancient glory, modern only in that it has been mechanically perfected for those who long to touch its simple strings and evoke its magic spell.
T
HE Harp Ensemble Company is a quintet which for peculiar beauty of orchestration has seldom been equalled by any five-artist company.
Three harps, a cello, and violin permit stringed instrument ensembles of truly exquisite tonal effects and many other stringed numbers, notably trios and quartets, on a program which also features delightful vocal numbers.
The Harp Ensemble Company is the product of the expert coaching of Clara Louise Thurston of Chicago, one of the most gifted harpists in the country and an organizer of exceptionally successful experience. Under Miss Thurston's direction this company has built a program of classic and semi-classic numbers whose musical charm and tunefulness aid wonderfully in creating popular appeal.
The ensemble singing of the company to their own stringed accompaniment is one of the most delightful features of the entire program.
There are no novelty features introduced. The Harp Ensemble Company rests its popularity entirely upon the musicianship of its members and upon the beauty of its instrumental and vocal selections.
