REDPATH
CLEMENS AND HIS MARIONETTES
IN Europe the Marionettes are one of the favorite amusements of old and young alike. A Punch and Judy show on any corner of London's busy streets will instantly draw a crowd.
The Redpath Bureau has secured Mr. and Mrs. Paul Clemens of New York, both experienced and expert artists in this line of entertainment, to present the nursery story of Jack and the Beanstalk through the medium of their nimble puppets. They will carry a specially built small stage, special scenery, lights, etc., for an artistic production.
A Day at the Studio
The Clemens have given their program the above title, and in addition to the Marionettes, Mr. Clemens will give a number of character re-creations of famous musicians, making each appear true to life in costume and manner, while playing his own instrument.
After a brief introduction, Mr. Clemens takes us into his studio. Who could more fittingly tell us about music than the Music Master himself? So Mr. Clemens introduces him and steps forth in the characterization made famous by David Warfield. He tells us many interesting things about music. What is the difference between good music and bad? What is Jazz? What is the difference between music and noise? How old are violins? When were pianos first used? Etc.
He speaks of famous musicians of the past and present. Tells us of interesting events in their lives, of their eccentricities; and behold, as if with a magic wand, he brings them before us. Thus he re-creates one of the greatest of all pianists, Liszt; the great wizard violinist, Paganini, who revolutionized the art of violin playing; also a great concert cellist, and he gives an imitation of Paderewski. Each one plays for us on his respective instrument.
By this time he has created an atmosphere that makes us feel quite at home among these immortals. We are almost on speaking terms with them and are invited to visit a gathering of famous literary lights, actors, painters and musicians of a hundred years ago to enjoy with them one of their hobbies, a Marionette show.
Jack and the Beanstalk
After this exhibition in which the story of Jack and the Beanstalk is told on a miniature stage by puppet actors, and with scenery, lighting effects and music, we wonder why Puppet Shows are not more popular today.
We are brought back to the present day and asked to imagine that we are looking in on the studio of a famous musician during his absence. A variety of characters enter here—the young man for his piano lesson, the Chinese laundryman, the old violin repairer, the prima donna and the man who has come to the city to arrange for his daughter's music lessons. Each one plays upon an instrument peculiar to his or her character.
Besides being a splendid actor, Mr. Clemens is an accomplished pianist, violinist and cellist as well.
