The New English Players
An Outstanding Company Direct from Hollywood
THE NEW ENGLISH PLAYERS are available in a repertoire of modern comedies, which will be presented in a most brilliant manner by these all-star players, all of whom have played leads on the legitimate stage, three of them in Hollywood.
Harry Pearson, director, is a fine actor and a noted dramatic entertainer, who received his education at Nebraska, Northwestern and Chicago Universities, Dr. Curry's School of Speech in Boston and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He has made appearances for leading universities in the United States and Canada, and also a number of appearances in France, Italy and Germany. At present he is the Director of Chicago School of Drama and Music.
Kate Pentzer Stokes, well known as an actress, dramatic artist and teacher in Chicago and Hollywood has taken many leads on the legitimate stage. In Hollywood she played some important motion picture parts, including the second lead in The Rescue Squad, released in 1936. Among her professional students in Hollywood were Frankie Darrow and Baby Peggy Montgomery. She is also connected with the Chicago School of Drama and Music.
Otto Bruder, a brilliant young actor, has had extensive stage and radio work in Hollywood and San Francisco. He played leads in Blood on the Moon and Rob Roy on the Pacific Coast. All in all, he has had seven years professional stage experience on the Pacific Coast and Middle West.
Pauline Fischer got her start as a model for Palm Olive soap. Her experience includes five years stage work in Illinois and Michigan and two years on the Pacific Coast, where she had leads in five legitimate successes. She also was a favorite radio star on KHJ, Los Angeles. A young actress of exceptional ability.
Some Recent Comments About Their Brilliant Work
Maurice Rosenfeld, Noted Chicago Critic
His American Queen, a very amusing comedy, given with snap and in a most entertaining manner, was presented in the Auditorium Little Theater, Sunday afternoon, November 21, by a group of extraordinarily talented actors and actresses, known as the New English Players. It was a premiere performance.
The play is what might be termed a sly travesty of the well-known actions of Edward and Wally and in its three acts gives vivid and funny details of their joint lives. The locale is Switzerland and France, and there is hardly a moment when the performance does not grip you with its human interest and fascinating story.
The four performers, who took part, entered spiritedly into the denouement of the plot, and first we mention Harry Pearson in the role of David, Ex-King of Constantia-Felix, whose diction and articulation were noteworthy of unstinted praise. He gave the characterization a genuinely true portrayal, and stood out eminently. The others included Kate Pentzer Stokes, Pauline Fischer and Otto Bruder, who all contributed to a well balanced cast.
Florence French, Musical Leader, Chicago
The faculty of the Chicago School of Drama and Music presented the three-act comedy, His American Queen November 21st in the Auditorium Little Theater. The play was cleverly done and expertly cast.
Kate Pentzer Stokes, dynamic, good-looking, adroit actress that she is, in the scintillating role of the wealthy American woman was a perfect contrast to the wistful little princess played so appealingly by Pauline Fischer. Harry Pearson, to the role of the king, brought a quiet, forceful dignity that he never lost even though some of the situations he found himself in were uproariously funny.
Much of the comedy to the delightful play fell to Otto Bruder. This handsome young man has a decided flair for comedy. He also has a fine sense of values; some of his scenes might so easily have been over-acted.
This unusually clever play was extremely well done.
Lois Watt North, Editor, Music News, Chicago
The New English Players, a dramatic group comprised of the faculty of the Chicago School of Drama and Music, were presented in a three act play, His American Queen at the Auditorium Little Theater, November 21 … The hall, which holds some 500 was almost filled, and these four intelligent and attractive actors gave a professional performance that scintillated with clever lines, crisply delivered … Kate Pentzer Stokes, recently returned from four years in Hollywood, Harry Pearson, director of the school, Pauline Fischer and Otto Bruder are the four actors responsible for the production. Mrs. Stokes, a very beautiful and fascinating woman, and actress, played the lead with a wealth of vitality for which she is noted. She used a very handsome wardrobe. Harry Pearson handled his lines with such a nice sense of humor and style and Otto Bruder and Pauline Fischer are among the most talented young dramatic artists in the city.
