Laura Tolman
Violoncellist
Music often seems as if it scarcely belonged to this material universe, but was
A tone Of some world far from ours Where music, and moonlight and feeling are one.
The Opinions of Noted Persons
Castle Garnek, Poland, Russia.
I have often had the pleasure of hearing Miss Tolman play the violoncello, and I do not hesitate to say she is an excellent artist, full of talent, temperament, and earnest in all her endeavors, doing her work in a conscientious and highly artistic manner.
Miss Tolman has already played with much success in her own country and also in some of the principal cities of Italy and Germany.
I gladly recommend my friend, Miss Tolman, and wish her all happiness and success in the Musical World.
M. EDOUARD DE RESZKE.
Park Lane, London, England.
With marvelous skill Miss Tolman brought forth notes of unvarying richness in the Widmund by Popper. Again in the Minuetto by Becker and the C Major Concerto by Goltermann, the notes were full and rich.
ELIZABETH LLOYD FIELD.
Rome, Italy, Via Venti Settembre.
Miss Laura Tolman was heard here in a recital with one of the leading pianists of Rome. Miss Tolman is an artist of ability and her solos were given with much beauty of shading and expression.
BARON STANILAS TOEPLITZ.
Leipzig, Germany.
Miss Laura Tolman's beautiful tone has given me great pleasure; also her musical rendering and phrasing. I have often heard Miss Tolman play and I look forward with much pleasure to her reappearance in Leipzig.
THEKLA FRIEDLANDER, Vocal Instructor of Leipzig Conservatory.
Berlin, Germany.
The tone and musical feeling of Miss Tolman render it full of charm for the listener.
KATHERINE RUTH HEYMANN.
Boston, Mass.
My dear Miss Tolman:
I was so very much satisfied and delighted with your performance of my work that I am glad of the chance to say so now.
It was first rate in all ways—done as an artist—and effective.
Faithfully yours,
ARTHUR FOOTE.
LAURA TOLMAN AND HER FAITHFUL DOG, LEPORELLO
MUSIC is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate and eternal form.—Plato
The Press
Brooklyn, N. Y., Daily Eagle.
Miss Laura Tolman, soloist of the Apollo Club, is a poetic and intimate, rather than a robust performer. All the delicacy of Popper's 'Devotion of the Forest' was brought out by her, and in the same composer's 'Tanze,' the lilting movement was preserved.
Good technique, especially in smoothness of bowing and in perfect harmonics, were notable in Miss Tolman's playing of Goltermann's 'Andante' and the 'Allegro Molto' from his concerto were numbers that served well to display the qualities in the 'cellist's playing just alluded to.
The audience recalled Miss Tolman until she was forced to respond with an encore.
Charleston, S. C., News and Courier.
By her first rendition from Suite by David Popper, Miss Laura Tolman at once won the hearts of her hearers, her skill as a 'cellist being evident to a marked degree. Other selections by Miss Tolman were well received and won loud applause. In fact, every number of hers was encored, to which she very pleasantly responded.
Buffalo Courier, N. Y.
Laura Tolman, 'cellist, was heard in several selections, and created a most favorable impression. She plays with certainty, beauty of expression and sonority, and in the two numbers by Popper was at her best. She draws a rich, sympathetic tone.
New York Press, N. Y.
Music lovers were particularly fortunate in hearing the assisting artist, Miss Tolman, of Boston.
Miss Tolman certainly has an easy and certain mastery of the bow. Her tone is sympathetic and always beautiful. Probably one of the most delightful excellencies of her work is the steadiness of the tone she draws, so free from the eternal rising and swelling that 'cellists are so prone to affect.
Miss Tolman wore last evening a prized keepsake about her neck in the form of a golden heart charm, most beautifully carved, which was presented to her as a gift of appreciation by M. Edouard DeReszke.
Boston Herald, Mass.
Miss Tolman played the beautiful 'Andacht' from suite 'In the Forest,' by Popper. One could almost feel oneself in the depths of the shady woods, as the tones of the 'cello depicted the forest quiet and solemnity.
Musical Courier, New York.
Laura Tolman, 'cellist, whom Edouard de Reszke called 'Tolmanina' and for whom also is named that good musical organization—the Tolmanina Trio—has just returned from a highly successful concert tour in Buffalo, N.Y. Miss Tolman was accorded the highest praise for most artistic 'cello work. The Clef Club concert given on Friday evening, in Buffalo, with Herbert Witherspoon and Laura Tolman, assisting artists, was a tremendous success. Of Miss Tolman's playing, the Buffalo Express said:
Laura Tolman, 'cellist, made her first appearance in this city, giving compositions by Popper and Mendelssohn, and an encore by Goltermann with true intonation and a very beautiful tone.
The Buffalo Enquirer, N. Y.
Laura Tolman, of Boston, proved to be an artist of the highest character on the 'cello.
Hartford Daily Courant, Conn.
Miss Tolman rendered her solos with much finesse.
Musical America.
Miss Laura Tolman, soloist for the Apollo Club, Brooklyn, N. Y., played Popper's suite 'Of the Forest' and 'Tanze,' which she followed later with the concerto by Goltermann Op. 65.
The last number was heartily encored and Miss Tolman played the familiar 'Wiegenlied.'
The warm, sympathetic nature so necessary to the successful masters of the 'cello is one of Miss Tolman's possessions. Her legatos, to which her selections were well adapted, were effective at all times. Her interpretations were invariably tempered with conservatism.
The Morning Mercury, New Bedford, Mass.
The 'cello solos of Miss Tolman were rendered with splendid technique and expression.
Portland Daily Press, Me.
Miss Tolman played the 'cello with a depth and tenderness of feeling and with a delicacy of finish which showed her to be a true artist.
Nashua Daily Press, N. H.
Miss Tolman's tone is beautiful, her technique clear and incisive, and her solos were all rendered in a most finished style.
Newport Daily News, R. I.
Miss Tolman played with broad, artistic merit, rendering her solos in a thoroughly delightful manner.
Providence Journal, R. I.
Miss Tolman's work demonstrated that she is an excellent artist.
Worcester Daily Telegram, Mass.
Miss Tolman, soloist for the orchestra, was heartily received. Her work was given with the touch of an artist.
Boston Journal.
Miss Tolman was heard in several selections. Her technique and interpretations were most satisfactory, each number being beautifully rendered.
New London Telegraph.
The 'cello solo by Miss Laura Tolman, was a gem, and so exquisitely rendered that an encore was insisted upon, and granted.
Musical Courier, New York.
Of Miss Tolman's playing it may be said she always suggests the artist she is, there being a finesse, yet the rich, warm sympathy and feeling which is so characteristic of the woman herself. Rubenstein's sonate was never heard to better advantage; her phrasing was excellent, technique flawless, and a tone was produced which sang itself into her listeners' ears and hearts. Miss Tolman's winning personality was also a potent factor.
MUSIC is a kind of inarticulate, unfathomable speech, which leads us to the edge of the infinite, and lets us for moments, gaze into it.—Carlyle.
