Ralph Gordon, Cartoonist and Humorous Entertainer. 628 Crawford St., Toronto Phone Kenwood 2424W
RALPH GORDON Cartoonist and Entertainer
Seldom does one meet with work so broad and varied as that presented by Mr. Ralph Gordon, and frequently he is asked:
Is your work suitable for Churches?
The answer is decidely[sic decidedly]:
YES.
It is suitable for any class of entertainment and will adapt itself splendidly to churches because of its Humorous, Inspirational and Thought—Creating qualities and High Moral Tone.
The following tributes from men high in church circles speak for themselves.
REM ARK ABLE COMBINATION.
As an entertainer for church concerts or tea-meetings, Ralph Gordon is a decided success. When he arrives you greet a whole troupe and a delightful evening is assured. It is seldom indeed that a man of such varied talents can be secured. His numbers are extremely funny, yet are clean, pure fun that the most refined lady could enjoy. That you will find him a scholarly gentleman at all times, one who will leave a good impression upon the minds of young and old and able at the same time to keep his audience in the best of humor, is, I am sure, a remarkable combination. I feel privileged to commend him.
—REV. G. C. MITCHELL, Presbyterian Minister, Rothsay, Ont.
HUMOR IS CLEAN AND HIGH CLASS.
I have engaged Mr. Gordon for entertaining in connection with my church work and have also heard him many times during the last number of years, and there is always one thing I have found about him and his work, one need never sit in fear of what is coming next or of hearing something indelicate or offensive to one's best senses. His humor is always as clean and high class as his writings, and I consider this a high compliment.
—REV. GEO. H. PURCHASE, Past Grand Chaplain, Masonic Grand Lodge.
INSTRUCTIVE, EDIFYING AND AMUSING.
The originality of Mr. Gordon's entertainment was not only instructive and healthy in tone for the younger generation, but edifying and amusing for the older folk, many of whom took occasion to speak to me afterwards about his work.
—R. PARKINGSON, People's Warden, St. Clement's Church, Toronto.
PRAISE FROM SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT.
The officers and teachers of our Sunday School had a most agreeable surprise by the manner in which Mr. Gordon was able to clinch a moral truth by a pleasing picture. Our pastor said he had $5 worth of hearty laughter, and, by the way, he laughed till the tears ran down his cheeks. Everyone who heard Mr. Gordon has something good to say about his work.
—OLIVER FLETT, Superintendent Baptist Mission, Todmorden.
DREW BEST ATTENDANCE—COULD LISTEN ANOTHER HOUR.
Mr. Gordon's evening was the feature event of the season in our church's course of entertainments. It drew the best attendance and was by far the most interesting because in addition to being exceedingly entertaining it was intensely instructive. I incidentally overheard one of the audience remark to a friend when passing out:
I could listen to that for another hour.
It is also a fact that people talked about it for a month after.
—W. H. KEANE, Chairman Entertainments Course, Riverdale Presbyterian Church, Toronto.
EVERYONE MORE THAN DELIGHTED.
Investigation showed that no one who attended the entertainment was disappointed with Mr. Gordon. Everyone was more than delighted with the tone of the evening's enjoyment. The moral lessons and truths presented in picture and story form, could not fail to grip the minds of those present and will have a great influence upon them.
—DIXON BURNS, Pastor Todmorden Baptist Church.
Y.M.C.A. APPRECIATION.
I have reached 5,000 industrial employees at noon-hour entertainments last winter, using 45 artists, and I want to say that Mr. Gordon's numbers have ranked among the best. They are absolutely clean and decidedly entertaining. His
Down on the Farm
stunt is, to say the least, clever, and in these days when we get so much
rough stuff
it is a pleasure to know that his type of entertainment has quality.
—W. E. BRADEN, Boys' Y.M.C.A. Sec., Toronto West End Y.
GAVE WONDERFUL SATISFACTION AT YOUNG MEN'S CLASS.
Mr. Gordon appeared at a banquet in our church given by the young men's class, and, it is needless to say, gave wonderful satisfaction. Personally I enjoyed his work very much. It was full of rich humor with all kinds of pleasant surprises all the time. His cartoons and other very rapid drawings were not only cleverly executed, but carried with them some useful lessons hidden beneath the humor. His impersonations of various characters were replete with humor and decidedly high in tone. In fact, all of Mr. Gordon's work has that element of high tone that makes him acceptable at any entertainment.
—REV. GORDON M. HOLMES, Pastor Ossington Avenue Baptist Church, Toronto.
ALWAYS CLEAN AND SENSIBLE.
We have had the services of Ralph Gordon on several occasions and have enjoyed him very much in every case. His entertainment is always clean and sensible and at the same time sparkling with excellent wit and humor. While he hits the lighter vein quite frequently, he never fails to lead his audience into substantial moods of thought and meditation. We like him.
—REV. DR. SOWERBY, Pastor Dovercourt Road Baptist Church, Toronto.
WHAT BISHOP BREWING SAYS.
We have had
Ralph Gordon
on two occasions at church entertainments, and he has given us a happy, wholesome, amusing program. He has a sense of the fitness of things which makes his work especially appropriate for church affairs.
—WILLIARD BREWING, Bishop of Reformed Episcopal Church in Canada.
CLEAN AND WHOLESOME HUMOR.
I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Ralph Gordon for the first time at our Men's Association Supper recently. I found his work very entertaining indeed. I think it can best be described as clean and wholesome humor.
He was never the least bit offensive in anything he said or did, and I believe his entertainment is the kind which is suitable for gatherings under the auspices of church societies. There are very few men who do this kind of work whom I would feel free to commend in this way, because their idea of the
fitness of things
is so often very faulty. But Mr. Gordon differs from these others in a very marked way and is bound to please and entertain both old and young and prove interesting as well as amusing.
—REV. R. B. COCHRANE, Minister College St. Presbyterian Church, Toronto.
WIT AND WISDOM IN HIS REPERTOIRE.
I have much pleasure in recommending Ralph Gordon to those desirous of obtaining a professional entertainer. Mr. Gordon was unknown to the committee responsible for our program and was engaged solely on the strength of the recommendations printed on his circular. We were not disappointed. From the first number to the last he had the audience with him, and each number was rewarded with rounds of applause. Wit and wisdom were both given a place in his repertoire; his wit was irresistible and his wisdom unerringly reached the mark. His whole program was delightfully entertaining and quite suitable for a church entertainment.
—REV. R. E. NEWNHAM, Methodist Minister, Shallow Lake, Ont.
HIS EVERY NUMBER WAS FULL OF HUMOR.
Personally I can most highly recommend Mr. Ralph Gordon's services. He maintained the fullest interest in every part. His crayon sketching as well as his character recitations and songs were very wholesome. His every number was full of humor with bits of wisdom running all through the fun.
—REV. J. S. HUMPHREYS, Pt. Union, Ont.
CERTAINLY KNOWS HOW TO ENTERTAIN.
We consider we were fortunate in having Ralph Gordon as the entertainer at our Annual Fowl Supper. His task was no light one, for we combined our supper, missionary meeting and concert all on the same evening. Despite the fact that five or six ministers spoke, his numbers did not detract from the seriousness of the occasion, although his work was humorous. He certainly knows how to entertain an audience with humor that is permeated with refinement and, at times, much good, solid wisdom.
—REV. C. N. PADDON, Minister, the Presbyterian Church, Milverton, Ont.
PRAISE FROM CANON BROUGHELL.
It is with pleasure that I give expression to my appreciation of Mr. Ralph Gordon's work as an entertainer. He was with us at our Annual Sunday School Concert and in every number he held the attention of the entire audience, young and old alike.
He proved himself versatile and quick and his good wholesome humor was mixed with scraps of practical wisdom.
—REV. J. S. BROUGHELL, Rector Grace Church on the Hill, Toronto.

The Needed Man
The Church or other organization that desires a program, at once refined, elevating, entertaining and full of wholesome humor, will find this strong combination in Ralph Gordon. Whether as cartoonist, reader or character sketching, his work is clean, hence forceful—He has left a sweet taste in our town.
One of our townsmen, who has lighted the grounds for over a score of garden parties said;
This man, Mr. Gordon, surpasses anything I have heard by way of entertainment at these gatherings. He is in a class by himself.
On an open lawn he held the attention of all from the little boy to the oldest man.—Rev. A. P. Latter, Pastor Methodist church.
An Appreciation
In securing talent for an entertainment, and especially a church entertainment, every committee is anxious to obtain one whose work will be, not alone humorous and entertaining, but will possess that degree of refinement that eliminates every hint of anything objectionable. The man who can furnish this combination is, in my estimation, an artist.
My practical experience with Chatauqua work and the high class programs supplied in their courses and my experience in church entertainments, give me confidence and pleasure in recommending Ralph Gordon as an entertainer who can fill these requirements most admirably. His humor is clean and wholesome and he possesses the happy faculty of introducing bits of wisdom that make you THINK afterwards.
One secret of his success is that he will not make jokes on physical deformities, the Bible or religion. I like him off the platform as well as on for he has some high ideals of life one is bound to appreciate, and he may make you laugh while telling them, but they sink in.
J. M. Smith, Pastor Emanuel Baptist Church, Toronto
Gave Universal Satisfaction
The program Mr. Gordon gave for our church entertainment gave universal satisfaction. I have not heard yet one adverse word of criticism. His singing greatly pleased the audience for
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the best of men.
Recently we had a celebration in our town. The entertainers on that occasion cost $72.00 and it has been frequently said that Mr. Gordon's entertainment was far superior and regret was expressed that he was not engaged for that occasion. J. M.
Best They Ever Had
Rev. Mr. Robertson of Walkers said to Mr. Gordon at the close of the program:
I think you are the best entertainer we have ever had.
Talent provided for an entire program if desired.
