THE ARTISTS
MARIE ZARA SOPRANO
IN ADDITION to numerous broadcasts and many concert appearances, Miss Zara has sung leading roles with the Philadelphia Civic and Philadelphia La Scala Opera Companies, toured three seasons with the San Carlo Opera Company and has sung at Robin Hood Dell in their opera season.
Whatever this young artist does is stamped with finish and talent. She is an excellent young singer.—
Herman Devries, Chicago American
Marie Zara was an ideal Nedda and her crystalline soprano voice did full justice to the Bird Song.—
Buffalo Times
Sang in excellent voice and with perfect intonation throughout … a good style of singing as well as much dramatic ability.—
Samuel L. Laciar, Philadelphia Public Ledger
Marie Zara's Micaela was almost perfection in voice and character. Seldom are these two songs done so beautifully.—
Augustus Bridle, Toronto Daily Star
She gave the part verve and sprightliness and proved herself an unusual soprano.—
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
She was engagingly vivacious as the vixenish flirt, and up to the climatic note sang brilliantly.—
Linton Martin, Philadelphia Inquirer
EDWARD RHEIN BARITONE
EQUALLY successful in concert, opera or oratorio, Edward Rhein possesses a voice of fine quality and the musicianship of the true artist. He is a member of the Philadelphia La Scala Opera Company and Steel Pier Opera Company. He has been soloist at Bethlehem Bach Festival, Sunbury Bach Festival, and is well known on the concert stage.
His magnificent voice as always, was especially beautiful in the upper register, which reaches well into that of a tenor, but never loses the baritone quality. His diction was clear.—
Samuel L. Laciar, Philadelphia Public Ledger
A rich and resonant baritone voice.—
Henry Pleasants, Philadelphia Bulletin
Showed to splendid advantage his fine voice, the Strauss number magnificently sung.—
Rockland Courier-Gazette
Edward Rhein, whose attainment of voice and musicianship have grown greater each season, was heartily applauded. His singing of 'Water Boy' was especially fine.—
Philadelphia Inquirer
He has a baritone voice of good range, power and flexibility and interprets his selections in a musicianly fashion.—
Portland (Maine) Press Herald
Edward Rhein was splendid, giving the role his finest qualities in voice and acting. He sang and acted most magnificently.—
Atlantic City Press Telegram
ELIZABETH WESTMORELAND PIANIST
AGRADUATE of the Curtis Institute, Miss Westmoreland also studied in France and Austria and made two European concert tours. She played in London for the American Musical Presentation to King George V's Jubilee. She is a member of the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she is operatic repertoire coach.
THE PROGRAMS
UNIQUE programs of novel and unusual character and universal appeal are presented by these outstanding American artists, bringing entertainment at its best and artistry at its finest, to please both the ear and the eye. Their varied repertoire includes Vienna Waltzes, duets from the best loved light operettas of Victor Herbert, solos of unusual character, arias from famous operas, each program embracing one of the selected complete operas. Wherever these programs are given their good music, conspicuous charm and humor, afford unusual pleasure. The operas are complete, splendidly staged, handsomely costumed and sung in English, understood by all, and delightful to watch.
THE SECRET OF SUZANNE, Wolf-Ferrari's one-act opera-comique is presented complete in every respect and is staged with meticulous care, preserving the humor of a disturbing domestic misunderstanding with archness, piquancy and fine regard for the delightful music of the amusing and unusual score.
LA SERVA PADRONA depicts the story of an elderly bachelor inveigled into a marriage with his maid through her intriguingly amusing efforts and plans, inciting her master through jealousy to install her as the mistress of his establishment. The music of Pergolesi whose fame is based on this opera is humorous, light and delicious and the story is given point and understanding with its fine English translation and adaptations.
IT BEGAN AT BREAKFAST is a new and sophisticated one-act opera—original, gay and amusing—presenting a typical every-day situation. The libretto of sparkling humor is by Marie Zara and Edward Rhein, the musical score by the well-known American composer, Robert Elmore.
