Miss BAKER and Mr. DURIEUX
ELSIE BAKER began her career in one of the church choirs of her native city, Philadelphia. She then came to New York where she is soloist in the choir of a prominent church. She has been soloist with the best known orchestras and each season gives concerts throughout the country under the leading musical auspices. Miss Baker is also widely known because of the large number of records which she has made for the Victor Talking Machine Company. They have earned her an even wider public.
WILLEM DURIEUX, 'cellist, was born in The Hague, Holland, and was for a number of years a professor in the noted Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He has appeared as soloist with the Lamoureux Orchestra of Paris. In this country he has appeared with Walter Damrosch, Modest Altschuler, Victor Herbert and Max Fiedler. For sometime past he has been 'cello soloist for the Kaltenborn String Quartet.
MR. AXEL SKJERNE was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he started his musical education in the Royal Conservatory of Music at the age of fourteen. He has also held the enviable position of pianist and accompanist in Scandanavia; and, has travelled extensively as accompanist for a great number of celebrated artists.
3500 Chautauquas This Year
TREMENDOUS INFLUENCE ON NATIONAL IDEALS
The Chautauqua is one of the most powerful agencies in America for influencing and molding public opinion. It is estimated that no less than 3500 Chautauquas will be held in the United States this year and that not less than 20,000,000 people will attend the programs.
Twenty million people will have their visions broadened, their faith strengthened and their lives made happier because of Chautauqua.
Keith Vawter, general manager of the Redpath Vawter System, is the man who made it possible for thousands of communities to hear these great statesmen, orators and artists. His invention, the circuit Chautauqua system, has made Chautauqua a powerful instrument for public righteousness.
Keith Vawter has given America its freest forum and has furnished the method whereby great public leaders in thought and action reach millions of their fellow Americans.
Through the medium of Keith Vawter's invention our great statesmen, publicists and preachers are heard by more men in one summer than Demosthenes and Cicero addressed in all their lives.
Born of democracy, the Chautauqua has become the most democratic thing in America.
