1328 BROADWAY NEW YORK CITY
The audience liked the old English songs that were given between the acts before the curtains parted; they laughed at Mrs. Hardcastle's vanity; they applauded her long suffering husband, and were captivated by Kate. And when Tony Lumpkin, his broad, red face full of sly humor, renounced Constance Neville and formally let Hastings marry her, there was good old-fashioned, unrestrained applause.—
New York Tribune, July 30, 1915.
Mr. Devereux cast himself for the part of Tony Lumpkin, the presumably stupid son of Mrs. Hardcastle by first marriage, a role replete in comedy. As step-son of fate, he was the big cog that turned the smaller ones, although Mr. Goldsmith does have him nearly break up the secondary love match by making him too illiterate to read. Mr. Devereux was Tony Lumpkin while he was on the stage and nothing else, with an accomplishment that was well reflected throughout the entire cast.—
Springfield Union, July 2, 1915.
