JEROME DAVIS AUTHOR — EDUCATOR INTERPRETER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
HIS LIFE
Jerome Davis is a descendent of John Glover who was the General in command when Washington crossed the Delaware. Both Governor Leverett and Governor Dudley of Massachusetts were ancestors. His father, Jerome Dean Davis, was a Lt. Col. in the Civil War and a missionary-statesman, who founded the first Christian University (Doshisha) in Japan. Besides travelling over the Orient in his boyhood days he was with Grenfell on the Labrador in 1915. In 1916 he was sent to Russia to have charge of prisoner of war work in Turkestan. This was under the Tsar's regime. On orders from Secretary-of-War Baker, he was destined to remain to see the Revolution at first hand, being placed in charge of all the Y.M.C.A. War Work in Russia. In 1935 he toured the world, lecturing. In 1938 he flew around South America making investigations in Brazil. He has been to Europe eleven times—twice as correspondent for American Newspaper syndicates.
AS AUTHOR
Jerome Davis is author of fourteen volumes (in some cases in collaboration) on international, economic, social, and religious questions. A single volume sold over twenty-five thousand copies. His books have been translated into many foreign languages. His published articles have appeared in: Atlantic Monthly, The Century, The Christian Century, Forbes, Forum, Harpers, The Nation, New Republic, The Survey, etc.
AS EDUCATOR
He has taught at Boston University, Dartmouth College, Harvard, the University of Wisconsin, and for thirteen years at Yale University held the Gilbert L. Stark Chair of Practical Philanthropy. At present he is on the staff of the New School for Social Research in New York. He has been President of the Eastern Sociological Society and was for three years President of the American Federation of Teachers.

HIS LECTURES FOR 1940-41
FINLAND AND RUSSIA
Illustrated by color film taken by Dr. Davis' party. The first color films of Russia to be shown in America. 16 mm. size. Dr. Davis also has a six reel film exclusively of Russia which cost $20,000 and which he showed at the White House. 35 mm. size.
BEHIND THE WAR—Conversations With the Diplomats
In the summer of 1939 Dr. Davis was abroad, in England, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the Soviet Union, Roumania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, and France. He saw the Premiers and Foreign Ministers of most of these countries and returned with much inside information regarding foreign affairs. He expects to go abroad again during the summer of 1940 seeing the effects of the war at first hand.
OUR JAILS—AN ANACHRONISM
Dr. Davis has been Chairman of the Legislative Commission on Jails of the State of Connecticut since 1931. He has visited most of the penal institutions in the United States and many abroad.
INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES AND LABOR UNIONS
Dr. Davis' knowledge of labor conditions in this and other countries is broad and deep. Some years ago he investigated human conditions among the coal miners of West Virginia for a report which was presented to the Federal Coal Commission. In addition, he has made labor audits for various factories throughout the United States and has been impartial arbitrator in the garment industry. A text-book on labor problems written jointly by Dr. Davis and other professors is just being published by Farrar & Rinehart.
EDUCATION DEMOCRACY AND ACADEMIC FREEDOM
Dr. Davis has been President of the Eastern Sociological Society and was for three years President of the American Federation of Teachers. He knows scores of academic freedom cases.
AROUND THE WORLD AS I SAW IT
Jerome Davis recently concluded a trip around the world. Everywhere he studied conditions of the common people but did not neglect to interview cabinet officials and leaders of the government. The result was that he clearly forsaw the present World War and has an inside picture of what led up to the present debacle in Europe.
WILL CAPITALISM SURVIVE
In his recent popular volume Captalism and Its Culture Dr. Davis has analyzed what is happening to our capitalist system under our very eyes and predicts the future course of events. Harold J. Laski of England says of this book, As admirable a survey as I know of the impact of Capitalism on our Civilization. Edward A. Filene declared, It will be quoted all over the world.

Dr. Jerome Davis' yearly group of lectures at the Institute has become a set feature of our program.
