THE PURPOSE OF THIS TOUR
…is to offer a de luxe bit of vagabonding along romantic trails in the Far East, with the option of continuing Round-the-World or returning from The Orient, for a small group of discriminating travelers.
…and to wander along highways and pathways through New Worlds with the maximum of comfort and the minimum of care, with no stereotyped itinerary and yet not aimlessly.
…and to discover the charm of other peoples through scratching more than the superficial surface, with an especial interest in their culture, customs and philosophy.
WHY THE FAR EAST?
Just pause for a moment in your daily pursuits and on a magic carpet of your thoughts soar away to the gardens and playgrounds and dollhouses and mysteries of the Orient. What a panorama it offers! The courtly courtesy of old Japan. Great fleets of Junks on the Yangtze near lovely Shanghai—as Parisian as Paris, and the smartest of cities. Repulse Bay glittering like a jewel at night, and scintillating with brilliant colors in the sun. A bit of a ride in a carromata on the Calle Rosario in swanky polo-playing Manila. Sukiyaki and lacquer and torii in the shadow of Fuji. Incense of old Peking and jade and porcelain and the Temple of Heaven. The Hermit Kingdom of Korea and fantastic stove-pipe hats. The Bund and Nanking Road and a coolie-drawn ricksha to all the silks of Honan Street. Kowloon Bay and the Peak of the charming isle of Hongkong. A banca ride at Pagsanjan with a thrill that lasts forever.
ELLERY WALTER
When Mussolini gave Ellery Walter his photograph and signed it To the Supreme Adventurer, Ellery Walter, he hit upon a phrase which most appropriately describes this dynamic young man. He is not an adventurer in the ordinary sense of the word. While his travels have yielded some of the most exciting experiences that come only to the most daring explorers, he is essentially interested in humanity and human affairs. He finds as great interest in an evening spent in the home of a Russian peasant hearing about his pleasures and his problems as he finds in an interview with von Hindenburg or Mussolini. In discussing his career he says, I'd like to be something more than a political observer. I want to interpret present conditions in terms of present day humanity; therefore I must know what is going on at the top and how the sweeping political and economic changes of today are affecting the people themselves.
Personal interviews with such world figures as Von Hindenburg, the Pope, Mussolini and the King of Spain, and a thrilling trip around the world on one leg, without money, have only served to stimulate his desire to do the unusual. His experience has been varied to an extreme degree: nomadic wandering through 52 countries, an itinerant newspaper correspondent, teaching English in the Moscow Institute, a courier, writer and lecturer. As a lecturer he has achieved phenomenal success and continues to receive return engagements on the most important lecture courses in America. Putnam has published three of his books: The World on One Leg, High Hats and Low Bows, and Russia's Decisive Year. His credentials, and his friends throughout the world among educators, diplomats and political leaders, give him and the people traveling with him entree to exceptional privileges.
