Oberlin College Glee Club
Figure
1905
SEASON
1906
Morris Daily Post, MORRIS, ILLINOIS, December 20th, 1904.
The concert given last night by the Oberlin Glee Club was enjoyed by a large audience at Hull's hall. The club shows careful training and the program was good from beginning to end. The music was that class that appeals to the public and was well rendered and gave satisfaction. In the chorus work the voices blended nicely and much ability was apparent. The club deserves its reputation of being the best college club in the United States.
Sandwich Free Press, SANDWICH, ILL., Jan. 3, 1905.
The Oberlin Glee Club gave a very fine program at the opera house last Friday evening. The hall was filled with a large and appreciative audience, who encored every number.
Their choruses and solos, in fact every number, showed the results of careful and critical training. The heart of every member of the club was in the work, and to the credit of themselves and Oberlin College it must be said they were far ahead of any organization of its character ever in Sandwich. Most college glee clubs spend the holiday vacation in having a good time and pay but very little attention to interesting and pleasing the people who gather to hear them. Not so with the Oberlin boys. A success is what they most desire rather than personal pleasure.
They are modest, quiet, unassuming boys, gentlemanly in deportment and during their short stay here won the respect of every one with whom they came in contact.
Their return will be anxiously awaited by all lovers of good music and those who met them last Friday night.
The Courier, COLDWATER, MICH., Jan. 4th, 1905.
Last evening, at the opera house, an audience composed of Coldwater's musical enthusiasts assembled to hear the concert by the Oberlin Glee Club. Shortly after eight o'clock the concert began with the chorus, Awake, Awake, 'Tis Morning, in which the club at once manifested its excellence and promptly elicited a hearty encore from the thoroughly pleased audience. From that time on to the end of the program it was
clearly manifested that the students had found an appreciative audience for the applause was enthusiastic on all occasions.
Part first was composed of choruses, while part second consisted of a burlesque orchestra number that produced merriment galore.
Part third was, on the whole, probably the most thoroughly enjoyable feature of the very excellent program, and consisted of a series of college songs, the scene representing an evening picture with the students sitting around for a visit, the opera house being darkened. The harmony in the songs was most exquisite, and so thoroughly appreciative was the audience that at the close of the program enthusiastic applause followed.
Twin City Blade, BENTON HARBOR, MICH., Jan. 3d, 1905.
It was a large and fashionable audience, composed of the representative people of the twin cities, that greeted the Oberlin Glee Club last night at the Bell opera house. From the first number, a chorus, Awake, Awake, 'Tis Morning, to the close of the program, a group of delightful college songs, there was not a dull moment. A high class program was given in a decidedly artistic manner, and the audience was not only appreciative, but enthusiastic, and showed its pleasure by encoring every number given.
Part two was a Kinder Symphonie, by the Royal Gypsie orchestra under the direction of Farenz Hubeantgossary III, which brought down the house.
The part most interesting and the one which awakened thoughts of college days in all their joyousness was the group of jolly college songs, always a real delight to the college boy and girl. This part of the program, which was reserved for the closing, like the preceding numbers was heartily encored, and if the appreciation of the audience had been considered, no doubt the Oberlin Glee Club would still be singing at the Bell. The closing song Oberlin My Oberlin, was heard with real regret. Everybody present enjoyed the concert, and should the Oberlin Glee Club ever again visit Benton Harbor, the same cordial greeting wound be extended.
