REV. RICHARD W. McLAIN, M. D.
Press Comments and Others
My Dear McLain:
I am not a monopolist. I would share the good things of life with others, so it is a real pleasure to me to learn that others are to have the privilege of hearing you in The Price of Hogs.Your fine presence, well modulated voice, splendid enthusiasm, originality of thought, and fund of practical homeYillustrations, insures to your audiences the same delightful hour the people of Ithaca including the writer have so often enjoyed.
J. N. McCALL, Editor of Herald,
Ithaca, Mich.
The lecture on The Price of Hogs, given, Wednesday evening by the Rev. Richard W. McLain of Ithaca, Mich., was one greatly appreciated by all who heard it, for besides being highly instructive, it was entertaining as well. Mr. McLain made the effort to impress upon the minds of parents that all children could not be brought up alike, not under identical treatment for the needs of one child were not those of another and that much wise discrimination must be used to secure good results in the bringing up of little children. The lecture was out of the ordinary and filled with vital truths.‐Gazette, Kalamazoo, Mich.
A very inspiring lecture was given last evening at the Stockbridge M. E. church, by Rev. Richard W. McLain of Ithaca. The subject of his lecture was The Price of Hogs. The people were so enthused that they asked for a second lecture on the same topic so that more could hear him.‐Telegraph-Press, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Sunday evening at the Saranac Congregational church, Grand Chaplain McLain delivered his lecture, The Cost of Environment. This was a splendid presentation of this important subject. Mr. McLain is a fine speaker and he drives home his points with apt and interesting illustrations that not only makes it interesting but impressive as well.‐Advertiser, Saranac, Mich.
Hudson, Mich., April 26, 1915.Dr. R. W. McLain gave a series of lecture- talks to our physiology class in high school some two or three years ago along the line of hygiene and health which added greatly to the general value of the course. His excellent knowledge of medicine, both from the theoretical and from the practical side, together with his thorough knowledge of boys and girls and of human nature in general, make him especially fitted to deal with the subject.

I am glad to know that the doctor has decided to get out a lecture along these lines and bespeak a large measure of success for the same.
Very sincerely,

Dear Doctor McLain:
I wish to write you just a word of appreciation on your lecture given last Wednesday evening at the Stockbridge Ave. M. E. church, on the Price of Hogs.I am sorry that every one of my high school boys and girls were not present. The influence of environment, and the care of our bodies, are timely topics, especially when coming from a man who knows from experienceand has the ability to place the lessons so forcibly upon us. We are arranging for you to repeat this lecture again in the near future.
Very sincerely yours,
S. B. NORCROSS,
Head of Commercial Departments
Kalamazoo Public Schools.
April 30, 1915.It has been my pleasure and privilege to have known Rev. R. W. McLain for the past two years.
He is a man possessing a strong and pleasing personality. His words ring true. He has the courage of his convictions and a natural power of eloquence with which he drives them into the minds and hearts of his hearers, that is seldom equalled.
DR. E. H. FOUST,
Ithaca, Michigan.
Ithaca, Michigan, May 3, 1915.I have heard the speaker, Rev. R. W. McLain, and have been impressed by clearness and forcefulness of his arguments. He always drives home his theme.
HOWARD POTTER,
Commissioner of Schools, Gratiot County.
Environment
ENVIRONMENT is the law of existence. It has no limitation; is without feeling or sympathy; is no respecter of person or circumstance. It stalks our pathway a continual presence, fashions conduct, declares quality and shapes destiny. There is no creature so small or great as to escape its influence. The laws of science, philosophy, physics and even heredity are here expressed in all their varied relations. Man is the creature of law under which he may be master or slave. Law is the path to glory or shame. We may choose which it shall be. If we choose virtue, she will write her name upon our character and be our servant, to weave for us garlands of roses; open fountains of joys; gather the respect of men and lead us by paths of peace into the presence of our maker. If we choose vice, it will become our master, to shadow us with hideous forms, dig for us springs of bitter water; burn its likeness into our form; crown us with thorns; finally leave us naked and alone in our misery. Man may be born a creature of circumstances in which he has no choice, but for him to remain so is his fault and not his virtue.‐From Lecture, The Cost of Environment.
