The Petersen Sisters
AN UNUSUALLY CHARMING COMBINATION
of
LYRIC and MEZZO
SOPRANO VOICES
THE APPEARANCES of the Petersen Sisters in their recent coast-to-coast American tours were nothing less than triumphs. Audiences and critics
ALVINA PETERSEN Lyric Soprano
alike were unanimous with generous applause and unstinted praise. The Petersen Sisters achieved this enviable success because they possess the happy faculty of pleasing everyone. They are thoroughbred exponents of the vocal art.
There is no resisting these lovely girls. Presenting programs rich in quality, elaborate in detail, they enhance their performance with their youth, beauty, charm of manner and matchless stage-presence. Theirs is the rare ability of inspiring confidence,
GLADYS PETERSEN Mezzo Soprano
of evoking the pleasant expectancy of further good things to come, of setting an entire audience a-tingle with the delightful sensation of solid enjoyment. In a word, they have that subtle and indefinable something which denotes the true artistic ability, and without which no exposition of talent can satisfy. The program featuring the Petersen Sisters will be a distinct and guaranteed success.
The delicate and harmonious blending of their exquisite soprano voices, one lyric and the other mezzo, forms a musical delight to which every auditor instinctively responds. They understand perfectly the difficult art of ensemble singing; how to send forth their matchless harmony in a gracious glow of tonal warmth; how to bring out all the caressing beauty and
fragile nuances of tender song passages; how to give the necessary swing and dash to spirited ensemble singing.
In their solo numbers the Petersen Sisters are as glorious and satisfying as in their ensemble. Each knows how to use her voice to full advantage and to give to solo work all the detailed care which perfect presentation demands. Alvina Petersen's voice is a perfect lyric soprano, of ringing brilliance and absolute flawlessness. It is unquestionably one of the finest lyric soprano voices in America today, a fact which has been subscribed to by more than one of our leading vocal authorities. Gladys Petersen has a clear, rich mezzo voice of unusual freshness and culture. It is exactly the kind of organ needed to correctly present her vivid and remarkable vocal interpretations.
By booking the Petersen Sisters you will absolutely guarantee the success of your program. You will provide your audiences not only with an entertainment which you may rest assured will be wonderfully successful, but you will also go far in establishing the popular reputation of your future programs.
REPERTOIRE AND OTHER DETAILS OF INTEREST
NOTE: The press comment elicited by the numerous appearances of the Petersen Sisters in every section of the United States, constitutes the most substantial proof and record of their amazing success. Some of the most characteristic and representative of these many press notices will be found on a separate sheet accompanying this circular.
THAT THE PETERSEN SISTERS are presenting the kind of vocal entertainment audiences want to hear, is evidenced by their repertoire. In their American tours they have appeared in nearly every state in the Union, and by careful consideration of what the public likes, they have built up programs remarkable for their even balance and universal appeal. This liberal catering to a refined popular taste is another important reason for their great success.
Their repertoire includes many of the most celebrated operatic arias and duets which have been written for soprano voices. They have also rendered with remarkable effect most of the best known French chansons, German Lieder, English (and Old English) ballads, and American Songs. By special request they have also prepared some of those fascinatingly plaintive melodies which have come to us from far away
Muscovy, and which have contributed so much to the fame of composers like Rimski-Korsakov, Tschaikovski and Rachmaninov. Nor have they neglected the alluring and intriguing songs of the North American Indian.
In ensemble they reach the high-water mark of excellence in such grateful numbers as the gorgeous Flower Song from Puccini's Madama Butterfly; Mendelssohn's exquisite On Wings of Song; Hear Me, from Bellini's Norma; and the famous Barcarole from Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann. In more spirited ensemble they are noted for their interpretations of such melodious favorites as Delibes' Maids of Cadiz and the same composer's Come, Malika, from his opera Lakme.
Alvina Petersen's repertoire comprises many of the gems of the great operas, such as the magnificent Vissi d'Arte, from Puccini's La Tosca; the ever popular One Fine Day, from the same composer's Madama Butterfly; the Waltz Song from Gounod's Romeo et Juliette; the Jewel Song from Faust; Micaela's celebrated aria from the third act of Bizet's Carmen; Musetta's Waltz Song from Puccini's La Boheme; and many others. She also excells in such purely concert numbers as some of the best known songs of composers like Chaminade, Delibes, Schubert, Schumann, Tschaikovski, Rimski-Korsakov, etc.
The operatic arias of Gladys Petersen include the touching I Have Lost My Eurydice, from Gluck's Orfeo; the celebrated Habanera from Bizet's Carmen; the Page's Song from Meyerbeers' Les Huguenots; My Heart at Thy Sweet Voice, from Saint-Saens' Samson; etc. Her concert numbers include a wide range of compositions by representative French, English, German, Russian and American composers.
