Audience Appreciations
It has been my pleasure to hear William E. Skadden deliver three addresses. His messages were pleasing to everyone because they contained some excellent philosophy mingled with fine wit and humor. His ability as a forceful speaker in cooperation with his pleasing personality assures him success wherever he goes.
RALPH ARENDS, County Supt. of Schools
Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois
Mr. Skadden is one of the most interesting speakers it has been my privilege to hear. Not only does he keep his audience awake but he makes them want to remain awake less they miss something.
SENATOR R. G. CRISENBERRY, Murphysboro
Illinois State Senate
Your address … at Baltimore … was a clear cut, striking presentation … and we all had more enthusiasm because of what you said.
HOWARD BRAUCHER, New York
President, National Recreation Assn.
It has been a thrilling experience to observe, over a fifteen-year period, the progress of William E. Skadden as a public speaker—from his beginnings as a winner of youthful oratorical contests, and as an effective leader in the youth movement of the early '30's to his recent outstanding achievement as commencement speaker at the Austin (Chicago) Evening Junior College.—He has amply fulfilled his promise of earlier days that he would develop into a polished speaker who would know and practice the proper balance between humour and thought-provoking substance, expressing himself clearly and with a pleasing delivery.
HERBERT W. HINES, Director
Institutes of International Understanding
Rotary International
Since you did such a nice job pleasing our public at Lexington last year, I wonder if you can't find some excuse to come to Chicago this year. Our High School Commencement is May 29.
J. G. ROGERS, Supt. of Schools
Orland Park, Illinois
Many people of this community are still talking about the fine speech you made at our kick-off dinner, personally, if I were to comment upon your talk it would be as follows: 'An inspirational talk, permeated with a happy blend of humour, facts and common sense, delivered in a forceful manner, which provoked real audience interest and thinking, and put across an important message not easily forgotten.
ROBERT A. WITKER, Executive Secretary
Community Chest of Decatur and Macon County
Decatur, Illinois
Seeing you called to my mind that I had not expressed to you other than orally, my appreciation and enjoyment of your lecture given at our Jefferson County Teachers' Institute. I believe that the teaching profession needs to have many more such inspirational lectures as yours.
SIDNEY S. HIRONS, County Supt. of Schools
Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois
William E. Skadden delivered our 1946 Commencement address. It was scholarly, timely, inspiring to old and young, forceful, and had plenty of humour. The Senior Class, parents, and friends were very enthusiastic about the message.
WAYNE H. ELY, Principal
Johnston City Township High School
Johnston City, Illinois
Just a short letter to thank you again for coming to Sycamore. A hearty well done for accomplishing your purpose of stirring up the Chamber members. During the past two days I have heard nothing but the highest comments on your speech. Somehow or another you managed to catch the tempo of the group. I
can assure you that you were very very well received and that we are looking forward to hearing you again in the not too distant future.
BERNARD N. OSMOND, Secretary
Chamber of Commerce, Sycamore, Illinois
William E. Skadden possesses an unusual style in delivery, combining buoyancy and forcefulness, punctuated with humour and a fine perspective of the contemporary scene, especially concerning our youth and their problems of today and tomorrow. Skadden has an engaging platform manner because of which the audience will request a return visit.
MRS. PHILIP P. SACHS, Honorary President
Jewish Big Sisters, Chicago
… A personal letter to you expressing the reaction of the Club members to your address 'Marry and Be Merry' … at the District convention of Federated Women's Clubs. I am delighted to say to you that all of the club members with whom I talked were highly pleased with your address and expressed a desire to hear you again at some future time. The address was not only entertaining but instructive and full of common sense philosophy … and I shall be glad to recommend you to any organization … you are well worth hearing.
MRS. J. A. McCollom, 1st Vice President
22nd District, Illinois Federation of Women's
Clubs, East St. Louis, Illinois
William E. Skadden has spoken at dinner meetings for the Granite City Y. M. C. A. and other welfare organizations and business meetings in this area. He has always been well received, as his addresses are well delivered with plenty of humour that illustrates points he is trying to make.—At all of these meetings he had return engagements, thus proving his popularity and the interest of the people in this subject matter.
LEROY LARSH, General Secretary
Y.M.C.A., Granite City, Illinois
It is difficult to adequately express our gratification for your address on the subject 'The Most Important Job in the World.' It was informative and inspirational and was delivered in a forceful yet entertaining manner. We consider it one of our outstanding programs.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, WOMAN'S CLUB
Beardstown, Illinois
I have had the good fortune of hearing Mr. Skadden twice—once … National Recreation Congress … More recently before a selected group of professionally trained recreational leaders at Detroit. In both of these situations Mr. Skadden indicated without doubt his complete grasp of the problems associated with recreation as they affect … military and civilian morale. Mr. Skadden has an unusually fine ability to present concepts … full of both organizational and inspirational information.
DR. FLOYD R. EASTWOOD
Professor Industrial Recreation, Purdue University
and Past President Recreational Association for
American Industry
It was with a great deal of enjoyment, and certainly not without enlightenment, that we listened to your address at our Rotary Club. I first became acquainted with the good job that you do at a Rotary District Conference in 1946 at which you were the guest speaker, and I made up my mind then that, if possible, you were to be on our program schedule of Quincy Rotary. I have heard many favorable comments since your being here, and of course, favorable comments are always noteworthy as, with meetings every week where we usually have a speaker, the ordinary doesn't bring comments. In fact, the best evidence of your value to us in this Rotary year has been the request already made that we invite you back, which I certainly hope you will be able to arrange in your schedule at an early date.
P. S. GATES, President
The Rotary Club
Quincy, Illinois
