Biographical Note.
CARLO LITEN was born in Antwerp—his father being Belgian and his mother Italian. His parents desired him to take up a commercial calling, and in fact he did so for a while, but soon his artistic temperament asserted itself and he devoted himself to mastering the classics of his Country, and subsequently presented these in almost every important town in Europe. His success from the first was overwhelming.
M. Liten introduced the works of his great countryman Verhaeren first to the English public when he staged it at the Kingsway Theatre, London, afterwards playing it at Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool and other great towns of England; and now intends to introduce Verhaeren's poetical works to the American public. Verhaeren is of course the greatest modern poet and the American public is sure to appreciate him.
The voice of Carlo Liten is unequalled; it is of almost unbelievable beauty and charm. Whether it be severe or tender, it is always rich and profound. It is with Caruso one of the most wonderful voices on the stage. The atmosphere he creates in each of his interpretations of poetic works is without equal and he has placed the art of recitation at its highest degree.
Apart from the success they have had in artistic circles, M. Liten's recitals have an immense value from the educational standpoint; and he has obtained enormous success in the numerous clubs and colleges at which he gave them in France, Belgium, England, Switzerland, etc.

CARILLON.
(CHANTONS BELGES! CHANTONS!)
Poem by EMILE CAMAERTS. Music by EDWARD ELGAR.
The Times
—The recitation was given with admirable fervour and clarity of diction.
The Daily Telegraph
—Intense pathos and fervour.
The Observer
—An outstanding feature of the evening—M. Liten declaimed it with intense feeling and pathos, and was recalled again and again.
The Morning Post
—He brought much meticulous skill to his task.
The Sunday Chronicle
—M. Liten recited the story of Belgium's woes and aspirations, and he came in for a veritable storm of applause.
The Evening Standard
—The delivery of the poem was the more convincing from the fact that his methods, profoundly moving, were never theatrical. He was called and recalled eight or nine times.
The Standard
—Most expressively recited.
The Manchester Guardian
—His interpretation was melodramatic in both the theatrical and the technical sense, and as eloquent during his silence as during his spoken words. With this vividness it had also the merit of being set in a consistent atmosphere of poetic sadness, and in no single word or accent did it mock the misery which it sang.
The Daily Mail
—An intensely moving rendering.
Leeds
—Recited with great dramatic intensity.
Birmingham
—Wonderful range of emotional nuances. A profound impression.
LE CLOÎTRE.
The Daily Telegraph
—Created a marked impression by his virile, powerful and clever acting.
The Morning Post
—Nothing could have been more admirable than the performance. Played with intense conviction.
The Daily News
—Gave a very remarkable performance.
The Daily Mail
—Played with glorious eloquence and genuine feeling.
The Daily Graphic
—His personality is most compelling, and he is a fine elocutionist;
The Globe
—There was in his acting a poignant intensity and a sustained elevation of purpose which never descended to histronic artificiality. His task was a most difficult one, and he most worthily fulfilled it.
The Star
—A fine mastery of verse.
The Slandard
—Played with much strength and power.
The Sunday Times
—A true artist.
Truth
—M. Liten is more than a great actor, he is also a fine psychologist and a poet.
The Saturday Review
—Carlo Liten is too excellent a tragic actor to be comparable with anyone now on the English stage—with the possible exception of Mr. Henry Ainley.
