NAOUM BLINDER'S arrival in America is the outcome of two happy circumstances. Felix Warburg, celebrated New York financier and music patron, met him at Vladivostok, Siberia, in 1927, and gave him letters of introduction to the American Embassy at Tokyo, Japan. In like manner, Louis Sterling, Chairman of the Board of the Columbia Phonograph Company, happening just then to be in Japan, heard Mr. Blinder play there. In consequence, this artist now has a long term contract to make Columbia Records exclusively.
Born in Eupatoria, Crimea, in 1891, Mr. Blinder has had a colorful life at home and abroad. At fourteen years of age, he graduated from the Imperial Conservatory of Odessa. He then entered the Royal Academy of Music in Manchester, England. Thence he went to London, and his career there was well under way when, in 1911, he was summoned to fill the post of violin professor at the Imperial Conservatory of Odessa, where he remained till 1920, except when absent at war and on concert tours.
In 1921, he began a spectacular tour of all Russia, which included appearances with the philharmonic societies of Moscow, Leningrad, Odessa, and Kief, under such noted conductors as Glazounoff, Klemperer, and Fried. In 1922, he was invited to take a professorship in the Moscow Conservatory.
In 1926, he played six concerts in Constantinople, at the Palace of Angora, for Kemal Pascha, President of the Republic of Turkey. Next year he made a triumphal tour of Japan.
Mr. Blinder's American debut was made in a Columbia Phonograph Company Celebrity Radio Hour, April 4, 1928, and his first American concert hall recital was at Carnegie Hall, New York City, April 10, 1928, under the auspices of the American Society for Cultural Relations with Russia. Following these, he was engaged for Chautauqua Circuit for the summer of 1928, and was also appointed professor at New York's distinguished Institute of Musical Art.
