SONG RECITAL BELEN ORTEGA
Direction Bertha Ott Concert Management PROGRAM
1. El Paño Moruna, Seguidilla Murciana, Asturiana Jota Nana (lullaby) Polo (To be sung without interruption)
Manuel de Falla
These are characteristic folk tunes of various regions of Spain which have been collected by Manuel de Falla.
2. (a) La Maja Dolorosa (Tonadilla No. 3)
The Moorish beauty reclines in splendor, yet only sadness fills her as she thinks of one she loved.
Enrique Granados
El Vito (folksong)
An old woman is worth four bits,
The young girl only two,
So because I am very poor,
To the younger, I'll be true.
Joaquin Nin
(b) Canción del Carretero (Argentina)
C. López Buchardo
A trodden, wooded path, an ox cart, and at sunset a song that comes from the soul.
Bésame (Cuba)
J. Ferrer-Godés
An enamoured girl feels angrily yet beseechingly of the failing love of her handsome mulato.
Alma Llanera (joropo) (Venezuela)
P. E. Gutiérrez
A gay, peculiarly rythmical song of Venezuela with words arising from the heart of a very poetic maiden … of storks, of roses and of sea foam!
3. Aria Mi chiamano Mimi (My Name Is Mimi) from La Boheme
Giacomo Puccini
Intermission (15 min.)
4. (Tehuana attire)
Guty Cárdenas
Caminante del Mayab
A Mayan princess visions herself again on the ancient path of her noble ancestors. Everything awakens to her as she wanders onward, the exotic flowers, the loud and gaudy parrots … even the temple ruins take form in all their massiveness and majesty! Suddenly all crumbles to naught and _____, realizing that she is but a vision of an era past, fades into the impenetrable jungle.
La Zandunga
(folksong)
The region of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, is imbued in legend, color and ceremony. Its women are tall, beautiful and richly attired. Miss Ortega wears the typical dress and La Zandunga, which is characteristically humorous, is one of the favorite folksongs.
Que Triste Estoy
I. Fernandez Esperson
An Indian girl enters the church, kneeling before the Virgin Mary she prays for the return of him who she loves
How sad I am, little Virgin,
His love I do not have,
Little Virgin, how sad I am!
Song Poem
Carlos Chávez
Ultra modern Mexican song creating the mood of being submerged—haunting and weird.
5. (China Poblana attire)
Miss Ortega wears the China Poblana costume which is the typical national dress worn by the Mexican senorita at a fiesta.
Danza Costeña
P. Valdés-Fraga
A young girl sings of the scenic beauties and simple happiness of her native coast of Vera Cruz. This, an authentic danza, has a liquid melody inspired in the lyrics of one of Mexico's great poets, Juan de Dios Peza.
Sombrero Jarano (excerpt from Musical)
Emilio D. Uranga
From the Mexican musical El Pais de la Ilusion (The Country of Illusion)
There is nothing so manly and elegant as the gold-flowered hat of my 'Charro'!
Aleluya
M. Lerdo de Tejada
A passionate, yet reverent exclamation of love. This selection embodies the two dominant sentiments of the Mexican, love and religion, inseparable.
