ACT I.
SCENE I.—Interior of Palace.
Through an open door may be seen the Pyramids and temples of Memphis. Radames and the High Priest Ramfis discuss the coming campaign against Ethiopa and Ramfis discloses the fact that some young man may be chosen to command the army. Radames, left alone, is filled with ambition to gain this coveted honor and dreams of laying his spoils of war at the feet of his beloved Aida. He now sings the splendid tenor aria Celeste Aida. At the close of this aria Amneris, the king's daughter, enters and plainly shows her affection for the young warrior. Radames begins to tell of his ambition but is interrupted by the entrance of Aida. Amneris now is convinced that Radames is in love with the Ethiopian slave. The king and guards enter. It is announced that their country is being invaded by the Ethiopian army under Amonasro, (Aida's father.) Great excitement follows. Radames is appointed commander of the army. All retire but Aida who with conflicting emotions sings the beautiful Ritorna Vincitor and the lovely and appealing I sacri nomi. She slowly retires as the curtain falls.
SCENE II.—The Temple of Vulcan.
This scene shows Ramfis, the High Priest, and all his following assembled to bless the campaign against the Ethiopians. An invisible choir chants in praise of Ptah. Radames enters and is presented with the consecrated veil, and the sacred armor. A mystic dance is performed as the curtain slowly falls.
ACT II.
SCENE I.—A Hall in the apartments of Amneris.
Festal dances and songs by chorus of slaves and Amneris in honor of the return of the victorious army. Aida enters and Amneris arranges a trap to catch her and force from her an avowal of her love for Radames by telling her that he has been killed. Aida's grief plainly betrays her. The scene closes with Amneris gloating in her triumph and Aida hopeless but full of joy in the knowledge that Radames after all still lives.
SCENE II.—Entrance to the City of Thebes.
The King takes the throne and with Amneris at his left hand, they prepare to receive Radames and the victorious army. Priests and people sing a splendid chorus to the glory of Egypt. The army enters preceded by trumpets and marches before the King. Radames appears under a canopy carried by twelve soldiers. Amonasro enters with the Ethiopian slaves. Aida sees him but does not betray his rank. Radames demands the prisoner's release. All are released but Aida and Amonasro, her father. The grateful King then rewards Radames with the crown of triumph and gives him the hand of his daughter as a reward for his successful campaign. The grand finale follows, with Aida and Radames filled with dispair and Amneris proud in her triumph. Amonasro swears vengeance but the curtain falls amid great rejoicing.

ACT III.
BANKS OF THE NILE
Radames and Amneris appear in a boat on the Nile. They land and go into the Temple. Aida appears in hopes of seeing Radames and sings the exquisitely beautiful O patria mia to her native land which she will never see again. Amonasro, who has entered, reproaches her for her love for their enemy and plans with her to get him to betray the plans of his army and to flee with them. Radames appears and Aida overcomes his scruples and induces him to reveal all to her. Amonasro who has overheard, now joins them and announces his rank, King of Ethiopia. Amneris comes from the Temple and overhearing their plans, denounces Radames. Amonasro and Aida escape but Radames gives himself up as a traitor.
ACT IV.
SCENE I.—A Hall in the King's Palace.
Amneris mournfully crouches in an attitude of despair. Radames on his way to his trial is stopped by Amneris who begs him to renounce his love for Aida. She promises to save his life if he will do so, but he scornfully refuses. Radames is conducted to the judgment room and Amneris in an agony of grief, hears them condemn him. On his way back to the dungeon Amneris, in repentance for her harsh words, curses the Priests who guard him.
SCENE II.—Temple of Vulcan with Crypt beneath.
Perhaps the most intensely dramatic and also the most beautiful, is the duet of Radames and Aida in the last act. Radames is to be sealed in the vault beneath the Temple and after his arrival there, he finds that Aida, who has heard of his fate, and wishing to share it with him, has stolen into the crypt before him. Aida dies in his arms while Amneris in despair and repentance is seen kneeling upon the stone above.

CHORUS OF VILLAGERS, ETC.
NOTE—Cavalleria Rusticana was written in a short time for a contest which was held in Milan. It is so full of rich melody and dramatic intensity that it easily won first prize and was produced in Rome, May 17, 1890, where it created a sensation.
SCENE—A Public Square in a Sicilian Village.
During the prelude and before the curtain is raised, Turiddu's voice is heard in the Siciliana, a song in praise of Lola. The curtain rises showing on the right a church and on the left an Inn and the dwelling of Mama Lucia.
Villagers and Peasants cross the stage and enter the church. Santuzza enters and approaches Lucia's dwelling. Lucia appears and Santuzza asks her if she has seen Turiddu. His mother tells her that he is away, but Santuzza refuses to believe her. She waits for him. The shouts of peasants and cracking of whips announce the coming of Alfio, who enters and sings a merry song with chorus. After his song the villagers disperse, some going into the church others in different directions.
Alfio, Lucia, and Santuzza are left and Alfio, who says that he has just seen Turiddu, also goes into the church and a chorus is heard in Easter service. Santuzza discloses that she is excommunicated and cannot enter the church and sings her touching romanza Vio lo sapete pouring out the sad story of her betrayal to Turiddu's mother. Lucia tries to sympathize and passes into the church as Turiddu appears. He inquires why Santuzza does not go into the church to worship, she reproaches him with his unfaithfulness and he, in a fit of rage tells her that he no longer loves her. Lola's voice is now heard behind the scenes. She enters and takes Turiddu into the church with her. Alfio now appears and frantic with jealousy, Santuzza tells him that his wife is false. Alfio swears to be revenged and Santuzza already half regrets her disclosure. They leave and with the stage empty the beautiful intermezzo follows.
The people leave the church and Turiddu sings the famous drinking song, inviting the crowd to drink with him. Alfio refuses and the insult is quickly followed by a challenge. Turiddu calls his mother and receives her blessing. He bids her goodbye and asks her to protect Santuzza, in case he does not come back. She does not understand and calls after him but he is gone.
Alfio kills him behind the scenes, women and villagers rush in crying Turiddu is murdered. Santuzza and Lucia sink upon the stage and the curtain slowly falls.

During the last part of the orchestral introduction and before the curtain rises Tonio, the clown, appears before the curtain and sings the Prologue. ACT I.
Canio and his band of strolling players, having finished their tour of the village, now return to their camp and traveling theatre, followed by a noisy crowd of their admirers. Canio makes an announcement of the attraction for that evening and leaves for the Inn accompanied by several villagers. The crowd disperses, some of the peasants going to vesper services, others to the Inn. Tonio, however, remains, seemingly to attend to the donkey, but he is waiting for an opportunity to make love to Canio's wife, Nedda. He approaches her but she laughs at him, then scorns him and finally when he persists, she strikes him with her whip. He leaves her, swearing vengeance. As he leaves Silvio, a young villager, leaps over the wall and joins Nedda. He begs her to fly with him. She refuses, but admits her love for him. Her confession is heard by Tonio, who has returned unobserved. He hurries away to tell his master, Canio, of his discovery. Canio hurries to the scene but Silvio has gone; he hears however, Nedda's last words, Until tonight, then, and forever I'll be thine. Canio, who is mad with jealousy, demands that she tell her lover's name, but she refuses. Canio attempts to kill Nedda but the others interfere and hurry Nedda away to prepare for the evening performance. Canio, left alone, is overcome with despair, and laments his fate, being forced to laugh and act the part of Pagliaccio when he knows that his wife Nedda is untrue to him. The act ends with the famous tenor aria Vesti la Giubba.
ACT II.
The villagers come to the play and amid general confusion find their seats. The play is the usual farce. Taddeo (Tonio) during Pagliacci (Canio) absence, makes love to Columbine, (Nedda) his wife. She laughs at him and finally he consents to act as a lookout while she entertains her real lover Harlequin (Peppe). Taddeo soon warns them that Pagliacci is approaching and hides himself. Harlequin escapes and the same words are used as when Silvio escaped earlier in the day. This so enrages Canio that he renews their real quarrel and again demands her real lover's name. The audience is delighted with the realistic acting, but soon becomes mystified when the intensity of Canio's passion does not diminish. Nedda and Peppe try to save the day but Canio insists on learning the lover's name. Finally Canio stabs Nedda, hoping that in her death agony she will call for her lover. She falls calling for Silvio, who runs up from the audience to her aid, but he too is stabbed by Canio, who then turns to the stupidified people saying La commedia e finita. (The comedy is finished.)

CHAS. H. CEASE
Kansas City is beginning to attract the serious student in recognition of the splendid opportunities she offers for cultured study. A series of symphony orchestra concerts assisted by the best soloists. Two string quartets each presenting a series of concerts giving the student opportunity for the study of chamber music. Two concert series including the world's greatest artists. Two music schools, an art institute and gallery with frequent loan exhibits, and best of all, a host of first class private teachers who have proved their individual quality by their recognized success giving them recognition throughout the great Southwest.
Chas H. Cease, Voice Specialist
Chas H. Cease, who for the past seven years has had his residence in Kansas City, has made for himself a unique place in the hearts of all true music lovers. Born of French-German parentage, by nature an idealist, he was reared in an atmosphere where music and the refined arts were as his daily bread. At the earliest possible age he was placed under the best German masters to pursue his studies and develop his musical talents. Although his education was for the most part in the English language (and he is the holder of three College degrees), he is still essentially German, and clings to his love for the German language above all others. He is today—a young man of thirty years—recognized as one of the best baritones in this part of the country, and an authority on voice building and the art of singing. 503 Studio Building, Kansas City, Mo. Voice Building, Tone Placement, Coaching. (All songs taught in the original language.) Available for Concert, Recital, Oratorio.
MISS GENEVE LICHTENWALTER
600 STUDIO BUILDING, KANSAS CITY, MO.
Since her coming to Kansas City, ten years ago, Miss Lichtenwalter has ranked with the most advanced and successful teachers of the pianoforte in the Southwest. She has enjoyed the advantages of study with the world's greatest teachers and virtuosi. Among them may be mentioned:
Heinrich Barth, Royal Hochschule, Berlin
Dr. Ernest Jedliczka, Berlin
August Schmid-Linder, Munich
Arthur Whiting (Eminent American Composer and Pianist), New York City
Rudolph Ganz, (Swiss Virtuoso,) Berlin
Her extensive musical education has been broadened by years of collegiate study, having won the following degrees: B. L. Mus. B., G. M., A. B., from Leander Clark College the University of Kansas, and holds credits in the Graduate School of Columbia University, New York City.
Hundreds of letters of appreciation and press comments attest her ability as a pianist and musician of broad culture and high technical attainment.
Miss Lichtenwalter's musical activity is nowhere more potent in influence than in the open fortnightly musicals held in her studios. Here all grades of pupils are urged to play from memory selections from the best in piano music. Especial attention is given to the symphony of the orchestral concerts. Four-hand arrangements are analyzed and played, thus giving opportunity to become intelligently appreciative of the orchestra and its great literature.

FAUST.
The overwhelming success of Faust during the last fifty years is all the more remarkable considering the dismal failure of the first production in Paris in 1859. Its popularity grew, however, and it has now been produced in Paris alone nearly 2,000 times.
PRELUDE
The first part of the prelude suggests the brooding of the aged Philosopher in his mental struggles and his dissatisfaction and unrest. The second part consists of the melody Dio Possente ending in sustained, solemn and impressive chords.
ACT I.
SCENE I.—Dr. Faust's Study.
Faust, an old philosopher, is weary of life, despondent and dissatisfied, for with all his knowledge he realizes how little it means to him. In his despair he is about to take poison but is stopped by the songs of peasant girls outside his window. He is enraged at the thought of so much happiness in which he has no part and he curses all that is good, calling upon Satan himself to come to his aid. To his intense surprise Mephistopheles enters, and offers him glory, riches and power in exchange for his soul. All these are declined, for Faust only wants youth and all that it brings. The compact is soon arranged. The fiend promises him all and shows him a vision of a beautiful maiden, whom he shall have for his own. The compact is signed. Faust drains the magic cup and is transformed into a youth.

SCENE II.—The Fair.
Crowds of students, soldiers, old men, young maidens and matrons sing their different choruses. Valentine is seen among the soldiers about to go to war. He sings Dio Possente a fare-well to his sister and home. In front of the Inn, drinkers are listening to one of their number, Wagner, singing a song. It is interrupted by Mephistopheles, who chooses to sing a song of his own (Song to the Calf of Gold.) After this he astonishes the crowd by performing feats of magic and finally causes wine to flow from the figure of Bacchus, outside the Inn. He then proposes the health of Marguerite and Valentine, who resents the insult, finds his sword useless in his hands. The soldiers now turn their cruciform swords against Mephistopheles who cowers in terror as the soldiers sing the choral. The famous waltz now follows and Marguerite is seen approaching. Faust offers her his escort which is modestly declined. The scene closes with a wild and exciting dance in which all join.
ACT II.
(The Garden Scene)
Siebel, who wishes to convey his message of love to Marguerite, enters with a bouquet of flowers, but they fade owing to the curse of Mephistopheles. He dips his fingers in the fountain of Holy Water and is delighted to see the flowers again come to life. Mephistopheles and Faust have concealed themselves in the garden and now Faust sings the beautiful aria Salut demeure (all hail, thou dwelling, pure and lowly). While Faust sings, Mephistopheles replaces Siebel's flowers with a splendid casket of jewels. Marguerite enters and seated at the spinning wheel sings alternately the ballad of The King of Thule and of her own thoughts of the handsome stranger she has met that day. She soon discovers the casket and in wondering delight opens it. Then follows the sparkling Jewel Song after which Faust and Mephistopheles enter. Mephistopheles takes care of Martha while the lovers are left to themselves. The Tempter now sings the Incantation in which he calls upon all the powers of night and of the flowers to aid him in his design of accomplishing the downfall of Marguerite. The lover's duet follows and Faust swears eternal faithfulness and calls upon Heaven to witness that his love is true. As he hurries away Mephistopheles bars his way and they wait for Marguerite to open her window. She appears and sings of her lover, hoping for the return of day when she shall see him again. She finally calls him and as Mephistopheles releases him he rushes to her and she with a wild cry faints in his arms. Mephistopheles laughs wickedly—Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha—as the curtain slowly falls.

ACT III.
Street in Nuremberg
The deceived Marguerite is mocked and jeered at by all her former companions. Only Siebel remains faithful (Aria, by Siebel, When all Was Young.) She is talked about in the town and Valentine, who has returned, hears the stories about his sister. The soldiers who have returned from the war enter and sing the Soldier's Chorus. Mephistopheles also returns to taunt Marguerite with her down-fall and sings his infernal Serenade at her very door. Valentine comes from the house and resenting the insults draws his sword. The great trio and duel scene follow in which Valentine is wounded. Marguerite comes out but is cursed by her dying brother. Marguerite seeks consolation and is next seen kneeling at the altar outside the church. Mephisto is at her elbow, however, and after his terrible prophesy, Marguerite sinks in terror. The choral is heard from within the cathedral, and with her prayers Marguerite attempts to break the Satanic spell, but tormented beyond endurance she falls in a swoon.
ACT IV.
Marguerite's Prison
Marguerite has lost her reason. In a frenzy of remorse she has killed her child. She is condemned to death and lies on a bed of straw in her prison cell. Mephisto and Faust, defying walls and doors, have entered her prison and Faust gazing at the sleeping girl is filled with remorse and repentence. He calls on her to come with him and be saved. She awakens at his calling and is filled with joy at his return. He tries to get her to understand and to come with him, but the poor girl's reason is gone and she only sings of the day that they met and of their happiness. Mephisto brutally interrupts them, telling them to hurry but Marguerite does not understand. The great trio follows, Marguerite singing her prayer, Faust urging her to fly with him, and Mephisto in desperation calling for them to come as the day is about to break. At the close of the trio when Mephisto is about to triumph and gain the soul of Marguerite, a company of angels appear and she is saved. Faust is taken by Mephisto and the curtain quickly falls.

THE CAREY SALT CO. Do not look at the next to the last page of this book. H-W-Co. (The comedy is finished.) A series of symphony orchestra concerts assisted by the best soloists. Two string quartets each presenting a series of concerts giving the student opportunity for the study of chamber music. Two concert series including the world's greatest artists. Chas H. Cease, Voice Specialist Chas H. FAUST. The overwhelming success of Faust during the last fifty years is all the more remarkable considering the dismal failure of the first production in Paris in 1859. Its popularity grew, however, and it has now been produced in Paris alone nearly 2,000 times. PRELUDE The first part of the prelude suggests the brooding of the aged Philosopher in his mental struggles and his dissatisfaction and unrest. THE ANDERSON CONCERT PARTY AVAILABLE FOR CONCERTS AND ORGAN RECITALS. FOR DATES ADDRESS RICHARD B. HALI, HUTCHINSON, KS. ALBERT O. ANDERSON Concert Organist RICHARD B. HALL Violinist RALPH RICHARD YOUNG Basso Cantante SCENE II.—The Fair. ACT II. (The Garden Scene) Siebel, who wishes to convey his message of love to Marguerite, enters with a bouquet of flowers, but they fade owing to the curse of Mephistopheles. ACT IV. Marguerite's Prison Marguerite has lost her reason.
