1930 Figure THE SCOTTISH MUSICAL COMEDY COMPANY IN THE COTTER'S SATURDAY NIGHT THE BONNIE BRIER BUSH AND TAM O'SHANTER THE COTTER'S SATURDAY NIGHT A one-act sketch based upon Robert Burns' poem By JOHN E. DANIELS Figure The sketch follows the suggestion of the poem. It may have been a picture of the poet's own home; it is applicable to many a peasant cot in the lowlands of Scotland. The elder bairns out at work were accustomed to return home each Saturday night to spend the evening with the old folks; mayhap a neighbor would drop in and the time be spent with song and story and homely pleasures. Figure THE BONNIE BRIER BUSH A two-act sketch based upon writings of Ian Maclaren By JOHN E. DANIELS Figure The transformation of Lachlan Campbell, a shepherd on the estate of Lord Kilspindie, gives the motive of the sketch. Austere, honest, bigoted, unyielding, Campbell's sternness and misunderstanding drives his daughter Flora from home because of her attachment to the laird's son. It is the kindly solicitation of Margaret Howe that melts the hardness, the quaint philosophy of Doctor Maclure that confounds the bigotry, prepares Lachlan for the return of his motherless bairn, and paves the way for explanation and reconciliation. While there is much of pathos and sentiment in the first act, the second is brim full of humor, song and story—an evening of joy over the happy conclusion. The scene is laid in the village of Drumtochty, Scotland, about the year 1873. TAM O' SHANTER A one-act sketch based on Robert Burns' poem By JOHN E. DANIELS Figure The author has constructed a musical comedy which takes the audience back to the time of the Ploughman-Poet and presents some of the scenes upon which Burns based this masterpiece. With rare art has been portrayed an evening at the Inn, in the town of Ayr, such an evening as Burns may have spent in the jovial and congenial society of Tam O' Shanter, Souter (the cobbler) and the Landlord. These well-known singers are in the cast: VICTOR GILBERT, tenor, as Burns. JOHN E. DANIELS, tenor, as Souter. DANIEL ROSS, baritone, as Tam O' Shanter. LEVERETT B. MERRILL, basso, as the Landlord. During the play these songs are sung: A Highland Lad, Mary of Argyle, Bide Ye Yet, Ye Banks and Braes, Hurrah for the Highlands, Corn Rigs, Will Ye No Come Back Again? Bonnie Mary, Willie Brewed a Peck o' Maut.
