THE REDRATH BUREAU
PRESENTS
THE PLAY of ROBIN and MARION
(Text and Music by ADAM DE LA HALLE (1230–88)
Of particular interest to schools, colleges, and dramatic societies which desire to combine their musical and theatrical entertainments with something of DEFINITE HISTORICAL and LITERARY VALUE is the presentation by REDPATH of this celebrated mediaeval Folk comedy drama. THE PLAY of ROBIN and NARION or Le Jeu de ROBIN et MARION, as it is known to music historians, is generally considered to be the FIRST opera-comique, and is, in fact, an honored ancestor of all opera.
—THE AUTHOR—ADAM dela HALLE.—
Adam de la Halle was perhaps the most prominent of the Troubadours of the thirteenth centiry and the music and stage traditions that have been preserved in his virsion of this familiar legend presents a charming picture of mediaeval oustoms. ANNE SHAW FAULKNER has this to say about the Author on page 76 in her WHAT WE HEAR IN MUSIC course.
The troubadours counted among their numbers William, Count of Poitiers (1080–1127) Richard I of England, The Lion Hearted (1157–1199) Chatelain de Coucy (1157–1192; King Thibaut of Navarre (1201–1254; AND Adam de la Halle (1240–1287) The latter, know as The Hunchback of Arras, was the MOST FAMOUS of the Troubadours. To him is attributed the pastoral operetta ROBIN and MARION, in which is to be found the germ of the comic opera of later days.
The play has been Reconstructed and harmonized after the manner of the period by JEAN BEOK, Poofessor of Mediaeval Music, University of Pennsylvamia, with English translation by J. Murry Gibbon. The play is just as interesting and amusing as the day it was written. It is the old, old story of the Black Knight that runs away with the beautiful shepherdess. However she is brought back and lives happily ever after with Robin—HER HERO!
THE PROGRAM, and CAST.
The program will be devided into two parts. The prelude to the old mediaeval folk play will be given in modern dress—and the artist will contrast the modern hit-numbers from the current Broadway Shows with the old, old grand-daddy of all Musical shows. This will make a most interesting evening in the theatre.
The casting and production will be in the hands of Howard Tooley, Musical Director of edpath. Mr. Tooley is selecting an all star cast from the personel of other REDPATH productions—such as the DE WOLF HOPPER Light Opera Company, The DE LUX ARTIST and LIGHT OF THE WORLD cast. This alone recommends it to all REDPATH Cities and Towns.
Here-in is shown the orginal costume plates made for this PRODUCTION
