ANNOUNCEMENT
R
ICHARD C. HUGHES, President of Ripon College, will be with us again for the Chautauqua Season of 1908. Dr. Hughes is himself a scholar and a thinker, and even more, a man who is doing things. He is a man with a message. His is a message which rings clear, and any audience will be enlightened and uplifted by what he brings. The Chautauqua is to live through its power to uplift spiritually, and through its ability to educate. Dr. Hughes combines these elements in an unusual way. We found him through Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus, and after a season's successful Chautauqua work, we have no hesitancy in again offering him to the public.
When you have heard his lecture;
The Real Boy, a Study in Education,
you will have new problems in your mind, but better new and true ways to settle them. When you have heard his series of lectures;
Great Messages for Today from the Old Testament
your interest in Bible Study will be increased and vitalized.

Pres. Eureka, Illinois, Chautauqua Assembly.
Alva W. Taylor.
Dr.Hughes is an entertaining and instructive speaker. At the outset he secures the good will and confidence of his audience, and he maintains this sympathetic relation throughout his address.
President Milwaukee State Normal School.
Chas. McKenny.
Dr. Hughes is a strong speaker; easy, gracious, clear, telling. He has ready mastery of the apt phrase and the apt illustration, and he drives home what he says with power. There is solid substance in his talks, but there is no heaviness in the presentation. He is a man to delight an audience, both in his matter and in his manner.
Professor of English Language, Drake University.
Lewis Worthington Smith.
President Hughes' personal presence is exceptionally pleasing, while his delivery is graceful and his thought concisely worded and systematically and logically arranged. He is modern and progressive as well as alert to keep in touch with current thought, and to my mind is admirably equipped, by scholarship, experience and travel, to be a leader among lecturers.

It was my pleasure to listen to eleven Bible talks by Dr. Hughes this summer at the different Chautauquas, always with deepest interest and profit intellectually. I am mighty glad he is in the field, and look forward to more of his talks next Summer. I feel that one could not well afford to miss any of his lectures. His interpretation of the Bible is a practical, everyday, modern exposition. A proof of his success was the fact that the audience grew each day.
Wallace Bruce Amsbury.
I have listened to Dr. Hughes many times, under the most diverse circumstances, always with deep interest and pleasure. He has the rare gift of telling the truth in an inspiring way, with fundamental optimism; the old truths without a hackneyed word, the new without baldness, or dissonance or irreverence to the old. I go out from his lectures feeling that my work is worth doing, and the world really a good place.
Pathologist, U. S. Department of Agriculture.
Haven Metcalf.
President Richard C. Hughes is a most inspiring speaker and a born teacher of men along the lines of Bible study which are now so interesting and valuable. I know of no man in the country who is better adapted for work at Chautauquas such as has made Winona so eminent in recent days. He has vigor, scholarship, devotion and eloquence, and I hope to find him in my work next Summer, doing as he can this great work of Bible instruction and guidance as almost no other man of my acquaintance is most likely to do.
Frank W. Gunsaulus.

The real Chautauqua spirit, that of instruction, is increasing the attendance at the morning sessions. And the splendid meetings conducted by Dr. Hughes are hours those who can possibly attend cannot afford to miss.

The Chautauqua Bible Course conducted by Dr. Hughes has been growing in favor day by day. He has been treating the Wisdom books of the Old and New Testaments in a masterly manner. While scholarly and critical he is devoted, orthodox, reverent and eloquent.
Eureka, Illinois, Republican.
The popular lecture by Dr. Hughes on
The Real Boy
was given Thursday afternoon to a large audience, which listened with intense interest and appreciation. The lecture was scientific without being perplexing; plain, clear and practical, and will live on in the lives of the fathers and mothers, young people and teachers, who listened with breathless interest.
The Eureka, Illinois, Republican.
The address by Dr. Hughes was the feature of the first day's session of the Chautauqua. Throughout an hour and a half the speaker carried the audience, which was a large one, with him. From pathos he moved into mirth. From a story which made the tears trickle down the cheeks of men and women present, he proceeded to relate an anecdote which caused the entire audience to shake with laughter. Couched in homely terms which, however, drove direct the plain truths which the speaker was bringing before his hearers, the address was one long to be remembered.
