JOE CALLAWAY
JOE CALLAWAY is a many-sided genius, who brings to the platform a rich background of the stage, the screen and the radio. He has been called the best young lecturer on the theater today. Martha Scott, movie star, with whom Callaway was associated in a dozen plays when they were featured with the Globe Theater Company, says, Joe Callaway brings to the lecture platform the wit of a comedian, the knowledge of a director and the perception of a critic; for he has been superb as all three.
Mr. Callaway's duties as associate professor of speech at Michigan State College have allowed him to continue his professional activities as guest director with the Blue network and as a lecturer and critic. At Michigan State College he is also director of radio education.
Mr. Callaway received his academic training and was a part of a dramatic scene at the University of Oklahoma, Goodman Memorial Theater of the Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Southern California. He began his stage career of over 6,000 performances in both classical and modern productions as a protege of DeWolf Hopper. He was featured in sixteen different Shakespearean plays as a member of the famous Globe Theater Company, which played to nearly 2,000,00 people at the Chicago, San Diego, Dallas and New York World Fairs. In New York he appeared in four plays directed by Margaret Webster, internationally famous for her productions, who says, Joe Callaway has great ability. He is an actor of exceptional talent and varied experience.
His experience as a director is also varied. He directed a professional stock company at Miami Beach, the San Diego Community Theater, and notably, the Marquette Summer Theater, which he founded and subsequently managed for four Reasons.
In radio he has directed over 150 plays and has acted with Jean Hersholt and other stars of the NBC and CBS networks. Norman Corwin, foremost radio writer and director, says, Joe Callaway, colleague past and present, but mainly future I have supreme confidence in the contributions he will make to this needy medium.
