PROF. R. WATSON COOPER LITERARY LECTURER
R. WATSON COOPER.
PROF. R. WATSON COOPER is the professor of English literature in Hamline University. His life has been spent with books and young people in the effort to bring the two together in such a way as to enrich the intellectual life of the present generation. His ambition is to win the common reader to a hearty enjoyment of literature, and the busy men of America to the rich delight of an active intellectual life.
He comes to us, not only with the experience of the college lecture room, but with years of public speaking in the pulpit and before popular and literary assemblies.
He came to the West but two years ago. The reception which the people of Minnesota have given him has been of the most cordial nature, and we are sure therefore that we are doing the public a service in giving them this freer opportunity of hearing him.

SUPT. GEO. C. BORCHARDT MADISON, MINN.
It is with pleasure that I speak of the excellent work of Mr. R. Watson Cooper of Hamline University as a lecturer. His appearance before the Big Stone Lake Chautauqua Assembly was hailed with delight by all lovers of literature. Mr. Cooper is a very earnest and polished orator, and I consider him the ablest man on the Minnesota platform to-day. He has proved himself to be an entertainer of rare ability.
SUPT. P. J. KUNTZ OWATONNA, MINN.
Prof. R. W. Cooper of Hamline University delivered the Commencement oration at our place last evening to a crowded house, and he was entire master of the situation. The Professor is an orator in voice, gesture and language. I most heartily commend him to those desiring the services of a scholarly gentleman and an orator.
INDEPENDENT HUTCHINSON, MINN.
The event of the evening was the address by R. W. Cooper on Intellectual Life. Mr. Cooper is professor of English literature in Hamline University, a man of fine presence and a splendid orator. He spoke extemporaneously and the hour in which he held his audience almost spellbound seemed less than twenty minutes.
Lectures of a Popular Nature
THE WORLD OF BOOKS:
and How to Get at It.
The lecture aims to encourage an intelligent selection and judicious reading of the best there is in the English book-world. It covers, therefore, a general sketch of the World of Books, an instructive classification, some principles for determining their relative and specific values, and the delights that await the wise reader. The Springfield (Mass.) Republican speaks of it as Prof. Cooper's helpful address * * * of especial help to those interested in literary work.
THE INTELLECTUAL LIFE:
Its Purposes and Delights.
The aims, methods and pleasures of the life of a healthy mind are portrayed and illustrated. Special emphasis is thrown upon the delights open to the common mind in the ordinary walks of life.
ROBERT BURNS:
MAN AND POET.
Burns is perhaps the most popular of all poets. This lecture is a sympathetic appreciation of his life and character and an interpretation of his poetry. Burns never fails to delight.
THE USES OF LIFE
and Its Misuses.
The Uses of Life is a picture of life as it is actually mis-lived by many classes of people, and a presentation of the ideal uses of man's little journey in the world.
OUR AMERICAN LINCOLN:
A Patriotic Address.
A presentation of Abraham Lincoln as the typical product of free America and the ideal president of a constitutional democracy in time of rupture.
LITERATURE AND LIFE: A Literary Topic of General Interest.
The lecture discusses both the relation of human life to literature and the relation of literature to the intellectual and spiritual life of the race.
RUDYARD KIPLING.
Kipling is today the most striking individuality in the English book-world. He is here treated as the potent representative in literature of the English-speaking world of the present hour.
OUR BOYS:
Who are They and What Shall We Do with Them?
A portrayal of boy-life, a description of the boy-nature, and a serious discussion of the danger period and how to meet it.
THE EDUCATION OF AN AMERICAN: A Patriotic Lecture.
It includes an analysis both of our educational ideal and of American life, and a plea for the peculiar training which our peculiar conditions demand.
