De Wolf Hopper as He Appeared in The Student Prince.
DeWolf Hopper Comic Opera Company
Printed in U. S. A.
Management: THE REDPATH BUREAU, Kimball Bldg., Chicago
WHAT has kept DeWolf Hopper, America's foremost comedian, so youthful all these years? That's his secret. Perhaps, it is his optimistic viewpoint of life and the fact that he is always active, taking leading roles in radio productions like Roses and Drums, etc., reviving his light opera successes in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, etc. Roxy used Hopper as his Master of Ceremonies for the opening of Radio City. He simply doesn't seem to grow old and his marvelous voice has lost none of its old-time fire and power.
DeWolf Hopper was, and still is, the greatest star ever to play leading roles in Gilbert & Sullivan and other light and comic opera hits of the past four or five decades. No one has ever equaled him as Ko-Ko in The Mikado or Dick Dead-Eye in H. M. S. Pinafore, for instance. Iolanthe, Wang, Happyland, El Capitan, Erminie, White Lilacs, The Student Prince are some other light operas in which he has scored big successes.
A BRILLIANT CAST
The Redpath Bureau feels extremely fortunate in prevailing upon Mr. Hopper to make some appearances under its management as Ko-Ko in The Mikado and Dick Dead-Eye in H. M. S. Pinafore for American college audiences and other auspices. Because of his appearances in New York and Chicago and his radio work, Mr. Hopper's engagements will be limited to just a few weeks.
Associated with Mr. Hopper in his comic opera company will be a brilliant cast of stage and concert artists.
Co-starred with the great comedian will be Lillian Glaser Hopper, prima donna soprano of operatic revivals of Erminie, Sweethearts, The Student Prince. With Mr. Hopper she has been a great favorite on the Pacific coast. Last year her success in Chicago was marked. She will sing the role of Yum-Yum, ward of Ko-Ko in The Mikado and the Captain's daughter, Josephine, in H. M. S. Pinafore. In The Play of Robin and Marion she takes the part of the heroine, Marion, a shepherdess. What a lovely picture she makes in all her roles.
Pooh-Bah, Lord High Everything Else, in The Mikado and The Boatswain in H. M. S. Pinafore, are sung and acted by H. C. Howard, well-known Broadway star, late of The Student Prince company. Mr. Howard has had the honor of being selected for a number of Mr. Hopper's comic opera revivals. In The Play of Robin and Marion he plays the part of the Villain.
Miss Eileen Hutton, formerly a star with the St. Louis Opera Company, takes the part of Katisha in The Mikado and Little Buttercup in H. M. S. Pinafore. Her part in The Play of Robin and Marion will be Peronnelle. Miss Hutton will be remembered by radio fans as the winner of a national radio contest put on by the Kraft Cheese Company for the most perfect light opera voice.
Rex Cushing, brilliant Canadian light opera tenor, who made his first American appearance on the Pacific coast in Fanchon and Marco productions, has played many roles in light opera. He is also a popular concert tenor. He will take the part of Nanki-Poo in The Mikado and Ralph Rackstraw in H. M. S. Pinafore.
Boris Aplon, formerly a member of the Aborn Opera company, had a leading role in the West Coast production of Grand Hotel, and has played extensively in Columbia pictures. He takes the part of The Mikado in The Mikado and Sir Joseph, K.C.B., in H. M. S. Pinafore.
Others in the cast will be such competent artists as Maurice Cherest, who will take the part of Pish Tush in The Mikado and the Captain of the Good Ship Pinafore in H. M. S. Pinafore; Gladys Sundstrum, Pitti-Sing in The Mikado and Cousin Hebe in H. M. S. Pinafore; Laura Butts; William Rollins; Martha Blacker; Gertrude Winston.
Mr. Hugo Brandt will handle the musical score.
The company will be elaborately costumed. There will be special scenery and lighting effects.
Mr. Howard Tooley, well known for his activities in the light opera field, is the producer and stage director.
