ELIJAH JAMES figure Brilliant Persian-American Scholar, Historian, Author, Speaker and Interpreter of Present-Day Trends in Europe and Asia Danger Points in Present Day Europe The Middle East-Key to the Mastery of Central Asia The Future of the Far East Has Man Progressed? Causes of the Present Revolution in Spain REDPATH BUREAU DR. ELIJAH JAMES Noted Educator and Student of Contemporary European Problems—Leading Interpreter of Political and Social Development of the Middle East Since the World War—Brilliant Speaker In DR. ELIJAH JAMES The Redpath Bureau has added another outstanding thinker, educator and speaker to its fine list. Dr. James' own people say he is one of the leading scholars and speakers to come out of the Middle (Near) East during this generation. His wide knowledge of history, his travels and investigations here, in Europe and the Middle East, together with his almost uncanny powers of analysis of present-day political and economic trends make his lectures stand out. At a recent convention of the International Lyceum Association at Lakeside, O., his talk was considered by lecturers, managers and members of committees, who were present, to be the high spot of the week's program. Dr. James was born in Kurdistan in 1892. His early life, which he spent in Persia, was both amazing and eventful. Coming to America in 1910, he entered Coe College and received his A. B. degree there in 1916. He got his B. D. degree from the McCormick Theological Seminary in 1919 and with it a fellowship which enabled him to take two years of graduate work at the University of Chicago. He remained there four years, majoring in history, he received his M. A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1922 and his Ph. D. degree in 1926. From 1923-25 he was professor of history at Sterling College, Kansas; 1926-27, Hillsdale College; 1927-28, Eastern Illinois State Teachers College; 1928-32, Hanover College. From Hanover College Dr. James went to England, where he remained two years, devoting his entire time to research work in the British Museum and the Foreign Office Archives. Since his return from England he has been engaged in writing his autobiography, and in giving special series of lectures on current events and psychology. Dr. James is an exceptionally gifted speaker of great dramatic power, who possesses a keen sense of humor. Here are some typical comments: Dr. James gave a most interesting and delightful lecture on present-day Europe. I consider him one of the best speakers that has ever appeared before our club. Every member enjoyed him and his talk. I should have no hesitancy in recommending him to any group desiring a first class speaker. — W. C. Petty, County Superintendent of Schools, Waukegan, Ill. In the first place, Dr. James is not only one of the foremost educators in the Near East and a student of the contemporary European problems, but, perhaps, the most competent interpreter of political and social development of the Middle East since the World War. Secondly, he is a clear, convincing and brilliant speaker. Therefore, it is not only a pleasure, but a privilege for me to recommend Dr. James to your audiences. — George Elias, widely-known Shepherd-Lecturer from Mesapotamia. Lecture Subjects: DANGER POINTS IN PRESENT DAY EUROPE A brilliant analysis of the present disturbing conditions in Europe, based on ten years' close study of the forces that have developed this situation. Why the League has failed in preventing wars of aggression. Other danger spots than Italy, Germany and Spain. THE MIDDLE EAST — KEY TO THE MASTERY OF CENTRAL ASIA England, France, Germany, Italy and Russia are struggling for the domination of the oil fields of Persia, Iraq and Caucasus and the trade of Asia. From 1932-34 Dr. James, native of Persia, was in England studying the relations between England and Persia since 1800. THE FUTURE OF THE FAR EAST Since 1904 Dr. James has traveled extensively in Europe and Asia and has been a keen student of political events in the Far East. As a realist and historian he frankly discusses America's relationship to that part of the globe. CAUSES OF THE PRESENT REVOLUTION IN SPAIN The underlying economic, social and religious factors which have brought about the present upheaval in Spain. HAS MAN PROGRESSED? Is our civilization in danger of decaying because we have failed to provide means of sustaining it? Where has man made progress? What can be done to avoid the collapse of his civilization by wars, economic disorder and political degeneracy? EDUCATION AND DEMOCRACY Democracy and universal education are essential to each other. If democracy is weak, its educational system must either be weak or undemocratic. Can we strengthen the weak tendencies in our educational system? FROM NOMADISM TO CIVILIZATION Dr. James amazing life's story from the day of his birth in a mud hut in the wilds of Kurdistan to the time he became a professor in an American college. Humor, pathos, thrills. An epic story. Printed in U. S. A.
