Master Showman and Producer …
Howard Tooley is the master showman. The name of Tooley is found early in the history of the theater. One Nicholas Tooley, a Warwickshire man, was one of the principal backers of William Shakespeare and his theatrical ventures in London-town as early as 1589.
Shakespeare said in As You Like It, All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players. This might be Howard Tooley's theatrical Theme Song. He likes to take every day events of life and dramatize them, make them live in song and story.
Mr. Tooley has been a Supervisor of Public School Music, receiving his training at Indiana State Normal and Cornell University. Even while teaching, his sense of dramatics was ever asserting itself. One of his productions, which had a cast of 1,000 school children, received national recognition and eventually took him away from his school work into his specialized field.
He has produced most of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and has had them on tour, featuring in them such stars as the late Dean of Comic Opera, Mr. De Wolf Hopper.
He was commissioned to write and produce all the patriotic pageants presented in the Colonial Village at A CENTURY OF PROGRESS. He has collaborated in the presentations of several spectacles, both at the International Amphitheater and Navy Pier.
He is Director of several Little Theater Groups, such as the Lake Shore Opera Players, a group of North Shore artists, who have banded themselves together to present the better things in the operatic field, and the Chicago Play Makers, who make a specialty of presenting Broadway Plays for the Windy City. As head of the Production Staff of the Redpath Concert Bureau, he produces each year many attractions that tour through the east and central states.
Every winter at the Chicago Civic Opera House, Mr. Tooley produces one of the leading productions of the social season, and during the holidays he presents an outstanding dramatic and musical event at Chicago's Orchestra Hall. Among his outstanding Chicago revivals have been such well-known Broadway successes as My Maryland, Student Prince, Blossom Time, and Rio Rita.
