ROBERT M. LA FOLLETTE JR.
AMERICA'S YOUNGEST SENATOR
One of the most brilliant young men in American politics, Young Bob LaFollette, has arrived as a Senate Leader. He is thirty-five years of age. He is a son of the late Bob LaFollette, and a chip of the old block.
Young Bob LaFollette is a progressive leader, and while a progressive is supposed to be unpopular in many quarters, there is not a more popular Senator in the United States Senate than Young Bob LaFollette.
At the last National Republican Convention, the only great speech that was made by any one was made by Young Bob LaFollette, when he denounced the oil deals in the name of the rank and file of the republican party. Even the press stands applauded.
Collier's Weekly had a very good story about this young Wisconsin Senator, written by Clinton W. Gilbert, under date of January 25, 1929. Mr. Gilbert said in part:
Along side of Mr. Borah as a leader stands Young Bob LaFollette. I do not know anyone else who combines in himself so many of the qualities that get one on in the world of politics as he does. He has the levelest head in the senate.
Figure
He always sees things exactly as they are. He is moderate. He is extremely likable. He is conciliatory in manner, but firm in his opinions. He always knows what he thinks. He never becomes excited, never loses his poise, takes defeat in good part, and is never made vain by success. He is aware of the virtue of hard work. He makes an excellent speech.
WILL ROGERS is a great admirer of Young Bob LaFollette. On March 14, 1931, he had this to say about him:
— Good many papers are poking fun at these 'progressives' who are meeting in Washington. Well, those are the fellows that are going to run next year's government. Neither the Republicans nor Democrats can even get excused to get a drink without the 'progressives' (the balance of power) sanctioning it. Be a good joke on both parties if these fellows had been right all these years and get a chance to prove it. You watch this Young LaFollette. You are going to have a lot of dealings with him in years to come. One thing, these 'progressives' won't have to be very good to be the best.
FRAZIER HUNT, noted author and journalist, in the Cosmopolitan for Oct. 1930 wrote:
The boy Senator swung questions of facts and figures that were devastating. That's what this youngest United States Senator since Henry Clay does to Senate traditions. And he does it with such good humor that they almost love him for it. As a matter of fact, I think this thirty-five year old son of Fighting Bob LaFollette has more personal popularity than any single member in the Senate.
Senator LaFollette is an excellent and forceful speaker. He will feature for next season these two lecture subjects:
