Grace Tren Torrance
Miss Grace Tren Torrance
Introduction
THE one subject of paramount interest to the woman of today is that of the position she is to occupy in the social adjustment of the future. That changes are coming is certain. How they will effect womankind and all humanity as well, is one of the most important questions of the hour.
Miss Torrance has made a close study of existing conditions, and her discussion is a timely one, and one of especial interest to men and women alike. There is nothing of the demagogue in her utterances. She offers her subject in fair discussion. She is blessed with a good disposition and a saving sense of humor. All this helps her immensely in presenting her message in a proper way.
We believe that Chautauqua and Lyceum audiences everywhere will welcome Miss Torrance and gladly receive her message.
The Great Divide
WOMAN stands today in a state of chaos,—at the Great Divide of history-making for women. The woman of the present is free to seek new fields of labor or unhealthy pleasure, and it is a matter of concern as to which way her energies will flow. Man is interested in the game of life,—woman in life itself. Woman was never so needed in the domestic affairs of life, both private and public, as now. Co-operation is urged between men and women in politics, instead of a struggle for power. It is time that men and women get together to build up life instead of wealth.
This new lecture by Miss Torrance deals very sanely with the so-called woman question. After preparing her groundwork carefully by a short sketch of woman's place in the world up to the present time, she then deals with the various fields of activities in which she is now engaged. She discusses business life for women thoroughly, and believes that while it has done away with the necessity of a forced marriage for convenience, still it is a happy adjustment only in the individual woman's life.
She argues for full suffrage for the American woman, but not with the bitterness of spirit or the militant attitude of the English suffragette. The position of woman with the philanthropist, of course, has long been established and her particular fitness for this form of public work is emphasized by Miss Torrance.
In her discussion of woman's position in society, she finds that conversation is almost a lost art in America, and that the new feminist movement by its giving to woman a greater interest in life and a greater ability to discuss life's problems, will go a great way toward making society more worth while. The club life of women is discussed clearly, its dangers and advantages pointed out, and the great service to humanity of the Federation of Women's Clubs is easily shown.
Altogether Miss Torrance has given to the Chautauqua and Lyceum public a very sane, timely and interesting discussion of the modern feminist movement, and there will undoubtedly be a very wide demand for this lecture not only from Chautauqua and Lyceum circles, but from Women's Clubs throughout the entire country.
