THE MONTAGUE LIGHT OPERA SINGERS
LYCEUM COMMITTEES are very apt to regard grand opera as high brow—something that appeals to the few rather than the many. Be this as it may, light opera appeals to all classes. The names of Reginald De Koven, Victor Herbert and many others are synonymous with music that always pleases and captivates as well as being really good music. Therefore, the Montague Light Opera Singers, announced herewith for the coming Lyceum season, come into a most desirable and appreciative field. They come, too, not untried in Lyceum and Chautauqua circles as will at once be recognized from the personnel.
Personnel of The Montague Light Opera Singers
ALTHA MONTAGUE, contralto, reader and accompanist, has been for five years with the Kellogg-Haines Singing Party. Before entering this company she was soloist at the Hyde Park Baptist Church, Chicago. She is a graduate of the University of Chicago, where she specialized in public speaking and English. This winter she is to study in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
FOREST HUTTON, lyric soprano, is well known in St. Louis as a choir singer, and as a member of a Stock Opera Company where she sang leading roles for a period of two years. She has also had considerable experience in dramatic stock work. While in a stock company in St. Louis, Miss Hutton arranged over 100 operas and plays for production in abbreviated or tabloid form.
HAYDEN P. THOMAS, bass and accompanist, was formerly with the Savage Opera Company. He sang and accompanied with the Strollers and later with the Cathedral Choir in the Lyceum, and other companies under Redpath management.
JOHN EICHENBERGER, manager and tenor, has been manager and tenor of the Kellogg-Haines Singing Party, from the beginning, ten years ago. Previous to that he was a leading church tenor of St. Louis.
Program of The Montague Light Opera Singers
Part one will open with the members of the quartet grouped about the piano, some of the quartet selections also being without piano accompaniment. Part one will also include trios, duets and solos by Mr. Thomas, readings by Miss Montague and character songs by Mr. Eichenberger.
Part two will probably be an operetta A Quaker Romance, arranged from an old opera of the eighteenth century, very quaint and full of humor. It is planned to use a small folding organ for this act.
Part three will include the lighter and most tuneful selections from some of the most popular grand operas, the greater part of the program, however, as heretofore stated, being given over to light opera.
