Underwater Adventures
Did you ever meet a big squirmy octopus? How would you like to? Well, Captain Art Hook of Bellingham, Washington, had that experience and will tell just how it feels. Walking along the bottom of the ocean, not able to see more than a foot ahead, and you felt the band of raw-hide clamps around your neck and legs; that would be the experience Captain Hook had when he saved a dying man from an octopus. This was off the coast at Port Townsend, Washington, and he had to cut the octopus to pieces to retrieve the body.
But that is only one item of the career of this brave man. For he has saved twelve persons from drowning and recovered seventeen bodies from the ocean floor. During his nineteen years of deep-sea diving he has made 10,000 trips to the bottom of the ocean. He estimates that he has walked a total of six hundred miles on the ocean floor.
Captain Hook holds the world's record for time of recovering a body from the ocean floor, the time being thirty-five minutes while using the regular commercial diving gear.
It is the thrilling stories of these adventures that he will have to tell when he appears here soon. With him he brings a large number of oil paintings, each about four feet square, to show the kinds of plant and animal life that abound in Davy Jones' locker. He will also bring his diving apparatus, helmet, shoes, weights, life belt, knife, and diving dress.
The
Pacific Motor Boat Magazine
for January, 1937, carries the full story and pictures of Captain Hook's fight with the octopus. The leading newspapers all over the country also carried front-page stories of this most unusual experience. Captain Hook has appeared on many coast-to-coast radio hook-ups telling stories of his many adventures on the floor of the ocean.
Captain Hook is a most interesting speaker and tells his stories with thrill and charm. He likes to have his listeners ask questions and on a certain occasion his program lasted more than three full hours while boys and girls continued to ply him with questions.
A PROGRAM OF THRILL, INFORMATION and ENTERTAINMENT
Press and School Comment
Captain Hook has appeared before hundreds of high school assemblies, community and service clubs up and down the Pacific Coast
Your address to the Rotary Club on February thirteenth was much appreciated by the members.
You certainly pictured the marvels and romance of deep sea life that most of the members had never dreamed of, and held their attention closely throughout the meeting.
I should imagine that your talk would be a source of great delight to younger people than the members of the Rotary Club.
James Gaul, Secretary Rotary Club of Bellingham Bellingham, Washington
I think that, without question, one of the best entertainments the Sumas Lions Club ever had was the one put on by Mr. Arthur Hook of Bellingham. His talk was not only very interesting but was about something which we people living on Puget Sound should know, but didn't. His description of the life in the salt water and his experience while doing his work as a diver are not only entertaining but along educational lines.
Fred Houston, Secretary Lions Club Sumas, Washington
Last week Mr. Art Hook gave a program at our assembly at which over 1,000 pupils were in attendance. I had hesitated about having such a large assembly since I couldn't imagine a man speaking on his deep sea adventures being able to hold the attention of as large a number of pupils. However, I want you to know that it was one of the very best assemblies we have ever held at this school. Mr. Hook is not only a very capable speaker, but he uses pantomime in a most interesting manner and has a personality that goes a great deal farther than just the footlights.
T. Malcolm Brown, Prin. San Diego City Schools San Diego, California
It is not often that I will recommend a speaker who has appeared before our student body. But I do want to inform you this time that Captain Art Hook gave us one of the best assembly programs we have heard for a long time. He was not only a good speaker, but also an excellent actor and entertainer, and completely held the attention of the students for fifty-five minutes. We should have more fellows like him.
Walter F. Hellbaum, Prin. Dinuba Union High School Dinuba, California
Captain Art Hook appeared before our student body this morning. He is undoubtedly the best number we have ever had. His enthusiasm reached the students as no other program has done. Moreover, his show is of real educational value to all students.
C. D. Davis, Supt. South Bend Public Schools South Bend, Washington
For several years we have been enjoying the programs offered by National Assemblies but I think, perhaps, from the student standpoint, yesterday was the most delightful that we have had.
C. B. Quicksall, Prin. Grossmont Union High School Grossmont, California
On April 16, Captain Art Hook, Deep Sea Diver appeared before our high school with an interesting account of adventure beneath the sea. We found his program very refreshing and interesting. He has a sympathetic bearing with high school students, retains their interest easily, and leaves them with an understanding of sea life that is appealing to them.
L. T. Patterson, Prin. Malad City Schools Malad City, Idaho
We sincerely wish to compliment you upon your selection of Art Hook as one of your leading representatives this year. He gave us an outstanding program which was marked by an enthusiasm and candor that our students liked in superlative degree. In addition to his splendid personal qualifications, his message and his manner of presenting it were equally appealing to our young people. His excellent advice to boys and girls to exercise judgment when swimming and boating was particularly appropriate for students in this locality.
Robert S. Farrar, Vice-Prin. Santa Ana City Schools Santa Ana, California
Captain Art Hook, deep sea diver, appeared before our student body this morning of a thousand pupils, and the entire student body enjoyed the program tremendously.
He spoke in a manner that made it humorous and also interesting for our high school students.
Russell Pierson, Pres. Vallejo Senior High School Vallejo, California
