LEON PEARSON
, whose column—

—appears in the 
Philadelphia Inquirer
 and other newspapers, is a well-known Washington newsman, and radio commentator, who is considered one of the leading authorities in the Capital on Latin America.




At the time he began the syndication of his articles on Latin America, Sumner Welles, former Under Secretary of State, wrote as follows to Mr. Pearson:




At this critical moment I feel it is of the utmost importance that accurate news with regard to our neighbors in the Western Hemisphere be given the widest circulation within the United States, and I am confident that your endeavors in this regard will be of real service to our country.




When Leon Pearson's column had been running for about a year in the 
Philadelphia Inquirer,
 he was asked by the editor, Mr. John Trevor Custis, to speak in Philadelphia on Latin America.  Mr. Custis wrote on receiving his acceptance:  
We are deeply gratified by your kind acceptance of the speaking engagement in Philadelphia.  Your articles in the Inquirer have been extremely popular, and I know you will receive a most cordial welcome at the Conference.




Mr. Pearson is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy (1916); Swarthmore College, A.B. (1920); Harvard University, A.M. (1922).  He is the author of the plays, 
The Next Best Man
 and 
Dead Man's Holiday.
  Before entering the lecture field Mr. Pearson enjoyed great popularity with his dramatic recitals—

Columnist Lists Good Neighbor Hazards But Urges Sound Long-Range Policy




Visiting celebrities and authorities are common to Swarthmore, but when the visiting authority is a local boy, that makes news,
 said Mrs. Roland G. E. Ullman, in introducing Leon M. Pearson of Washington, D. C. to the Woman's Club on Tuesday.  Mr. Pearson spoke of the engagement as a happy homecoming and the well-filled clubhouse, despite the unpleasant weather, testified to the loyalty of his many friends.




In his discussion of 
Below the Rio Grande
 Mr. Pearson stated that 
The Good Neighbor policy is the vogue today.
  People are studying Spanish by the millions, and listening to Argentine tangoes and Cuban Rhumbas.  The presidents of Latin America, not to mention the doctors, the journalists, and the scientists, are being brought to the United States on official invitation or travel fellowships.




The policy will have to go deep, or it will only alienate the Latins by disillusionment.  And it will have to be long-range, for the differences between us are too profound to be overcome in a year or two.  Let's work for solidarity—but with our eyes open.
