BERTRAND LYON
Presenting Masterpieces
He has that gift of the Gods to an artist—Magnetism
IT IS THE PURPOSE of this circular to give an accurate representation of Bertrand Lyon and his work. Contrary to the usual custom, press notices and testimonials will be omitted and the space devoted to the practical questions: Who is he? What does he do? Here is a man who has the Experience and the Personality, the Message and the Delivery, to satisfy the most discriminating audiences. He is a trained man and this is his life work. For the past ten years President of the Lyon School of Expression, Dramatic critic and coach, he has divided his time between the School and the Platform. Thirty-five years old, with all the fire and force of a young man and the experience of a veteran. Before an audience he is magnetic—alive to his finger tips. He has something worth while to give, and the know how which enables him to get over into his audiences and grip their interest and hold them.
His work is marked by great earnestness and sincerity of purpose, and he never fails to arouse his hearers to the highest pitch of enthusiasm. With a voice of wonderful melody and power, he can be distinctly heard by the largest audience and every tone adds to the richness and beauty of his Interpretations.
What does he give? Masterpieces exclusively; no ancient yellocution stunts, no make-up or grease-paint travesties, no platitudinous ponderosities.
Bertrand Lyon concentrates his genius on the kind of masterpieces that everybody can understand and enjoy. He gives modern Lecture-Recitals; artistic, enjoyable, inspirational; cramfull of human interest.
He Specializes on Mark Twain
Interpreting his great stories, vitalizing his inimitable characters, expressing his hearty, wholesome fun and keen philosophy. Admittedly the hardest place to fill on lyceum and chautauqua courses is that of humorist. You may have wondered where you could get a humorous number for your course, something rich in humor and at the same time vital with human interest, vastly entertaining, but not lightweight. If so, engage Bertrand Lyon to give you Huckleberry Finn, the best story Mark Twain ever wrote. You will have a packed house that night for Huck Finn pulls and your people will like it. Immensely enjoyed is the verdict everywhere.
Or, if you want something big and elemental, take The Strength of the Hills, an inspiration to nobler living; or, if you want a dynamic message that will pull your people out of a rut with a jerk and fire them to white heat; take Spizzerinktum, original and copyrighted.
After hearing Bertrand Lyon in any one of these, you will say: That was a masterpiece, delivered by a master. This man is an artist; he is on the Platform because he belongs there.
For the delight of audiences
Huckleberry Finn
AN INTERPRETATION of the world's masterpiece of humor. The best story Mark Twain ever wrote! Pronounced by critics the greatest American story. That great human book, warm with the actuality of experience, vibrant with the heart-throbs of human interest; that delightful story, which has been called The Romance of Eternal Youth. An entertaining Recital which appeals to old and young alike, with its irresistible humor and wholesome fun.
In this artistic presentation the characters are as realistic as the actors in a play; yet the interpretation is so sympathetic and genuine that the literary motif is not lost. Back of the scenes, there moves a spirit which we all know and love; a romping spirit which stirs us with its buoyant life and action; a spirit which touches our hearts with its bubbling fun and laughter; a spirit forever joyous,—forever young; the irrepressible spirit of boyhood. Audiences report Immensely enjoyed. An evening of hearty rollicking laughter and wholesome fun. A humorous program unsurpassed.
The characters became real people, and the audience had the sense of floating with them down the majestic river, under the southern stars. The climax of dramatic art was reached when the thunder storm broke over the assembled villagers in the grave yard scene, and the spell was only broken when Huck slipped away in the darkness and shinned down the road to the raft. So vivid was the portrayal of this story that those present will henceforth have a sense of personal acquaintance with Huck Finn and Nigger Jim, and the King and the Duke. Bertrand Lyon has established himself in Denver as a prince of entertainers.
Mark Twain, the Incomparable
A LECTURE-RECITAL presenting an intimate and fascinating study of the life and work of this remarkable man. Illustrated with dramatic and humorous incidents in his career, and Readings from his famous books. This number will make you better acquainted with the man called the supreme genius of our age and fill you with the joy of his humor and the virility of his American spirit.
SPEND A HAPPY EVENING WITH MARK TWAIN and renew your youth. Remember the days when you read Tom Sawyer and Puddin' Head Wilson and met Colonel Mulberry Sellers. Go back to them again with Mark Twain.
Free your business-bound imagination. You'll laugh at his whimsical fancy. You'll love him. He comes like an old friend and warms the cockles o' the heart. Next to sunshine and fresh air as a mental tonic!
MARK TWAIN, the Incomparable, adds to the joy of living.
The Strength of the Hills
BIG AND ELEMENTAL; full of uplift and outlook. Wherever this number has been given it has been commended as a Lecture of remarkable strength and beauty and an inspiration to nobler living. It is essentially a message from the West to the East, a voice from the high places of a land which is new and free; a voice vibrant with the Western spirit and eloquent with the ideals of the great West. A protest against the gross materialism, the sordid greed of our time, and the fast pace of American living. Around the fine old text, I will lift up mine eyes until the hills, from whence cometh my strength, Mr. Lyon has woven a powerful plea for Individualism. Strikingly original in its treatment of the rugged forces of nature, it has all the appeal of the call of the mountains.
'The Strength of the Hills' was the greatest commencement address we have ever listened to. I wish all the young people in America could hear this inspiring message.
