BRUCE MACFARLANE is one of Chicago's able and popular news analyst and commentators, who has specialized in the field of international relations. He has done considerable research on the spread of communism throughout the world, and has made a special study of how news is slanted over the air ways, in newspapers, magazines and books. Having traveled widely both in this country and Europe, he keeps his platform talks alive with good illustrative material. At present he is Assistant News Director for WGN.
Mr. Macfarlane is a native of Chicago and received his early education at Chicago Latin School. Later he went to The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsvlvania[sicPennsylvania. In 1942 he received his AB degree from Princeton in international relations.
Served four years in US Navy as a Captain of several PT boats and as an instructor at the PT school in Newport, Rhode Island, leaving active duty in 1946 as a Lieutenant, and maintaining his reserve status.
His business career began after the war with WGN in the public relations and production departments. In 1947, he joined Bache and Company, a brokerage house, and remained there until January 1948, when he rejoined WGN in the news department under Robert F. Hurleigh.
In the ensueing[sicensuing years, he has served as news editor and writer, as news analyst on his own programs, as substitute for Hurleigh over the Mutual network, and, for a time, as news analyst on an early morning TV program.
Married in the fall of 1950, his family consists of wife and two boys. His religion is Episcopalian. Recently he was elected president of the Chicago chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He is a member of the journalistic fraternity Sigma Delta Chi. His recreational pursuits consist of golf, tennis, water skiing and regular skiing.
