FOR the fiftieth time BURTON HOLMES announces a new series of his colorful entertainments, which have enjoyed the favor of the great American public for a full half century.
HE should be resting on his laurels—but who wants to rest these days? More active than ever, now seventy three years young, the originator of the modern Travelogue has prepared for his Golden Anniversary year the most thrillingly beautiful and significant programs of his entire career.
HE has been the leader and the pioneer of the Travel lecture platform since 1893, and during this time he has been credited with innumerable FIRSTS, among which we find:
FIRST to present magic lantern pictures all in color, in 1893,
FIRST to make and show foreign travel pictures in motion, in 1897,
FIRST to film war scenes, (in the Philippines), in 1899,
FIRST to create complete programs in Kodachrome, natural color, in 1940,
AND NOW IN 1943
FIRST to illustrate his travel experiences exclusively in living, moving color, without recourse to lantern slides.
DURING these fifty years Burton Holmes has traveled and filmed the entire TRAVEL WORLD, and previous to the present conflict he crossed one or more oceans every year. He has appeared before six thousand audiences, approximately, for more than ten million paying customers.
AS noted in his
Life Story
—
Burton Holmes has so shaped his life-course that he sails serenely athwart our harassed, crisis-ridden world, ignoring its darker side, reveling ever in its sunlit beauty. Yet all this beauty he has not selfishly hoarded. Rather has he distilled it and shared it with his fellows through voice, screen and illustrated prose.
IT is interesting to note that he has missed only two performances in fifty years, even his motor smash which occurred in Finland, in 1939, did not stop him—he talked that season, 130 appearances, from a roller chair.
NOW on his feet—and on his toes—again he is ready to greet his public in 1943 with the best, the most beautiful and most dramatic pictures that he has yet produced.
MR. HOLMES hopes that all his friends, the oldest and the newest, will join in making his Golden Jubilee Year the most memorable of all.
