Portrait
Donald F. Abel is a graduate of the University of Chicago, having specialized in
psychology in that institution. He has also studied at the School of Speech, Northwestern University under men like Lew Sarrett. Mr. Abel is one of the leaders of the young men of the nation, in fact served for two years as Executive Vice-President of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. He has served as president of the Junior Association of Commerce of Chicago, was appointed by former Mayor Dever, as a member of the American Ideal Commission, and is a member of the Speakers Bureau and Illinois Relations Committee of the Chicago Association of Commerce.
He is the Director of the Abel Psychological Organization and in that capacity has had years of experience with psychology as applied to the problems of every day life.
As a speaker, he has the knack of taking a highly abstract subject and presenting it in a manner which is both easily understood and gripping to the highest degree. As a radio speaker over WMAQ, WQJ and WHT, he received thousands of letters from every portion of America expressing the interest and appreciation of his unseen audience.
In arranging a program for your members, there are few if any subjects which would arouse greater interest than psychology. Because psychology is after all the science of ourselves, of our children, of the people we do business with. What could be more interesting? On the other hand, the right type of lecture is not so easy to obtain. Most of the lecturers in this field are either charlatans who have no training or University professors, who, while well qualified to speak authoritatively in the field, nevertheless are often interested more in the theoretical than the practical side and therefore are not particularly interesting to a popular audience.
Donald F. Abel knows that his audience wants to know primarily what psychology can do for them and his lectures are arranged accordingly. Any one of the following four lectures, each designed for a different type of group, is guaranteed to go over.
THE DARK CONTINENT OF THE MINDCovers the vital subjects of habit, will, fear, thought, etc. Designed primarily for women's clubs, groups of young men and women, etc.
PSYCHOLOGY OF ADVERTISING AND SELLINGCovers the motives which induce human action. Of interest to groups of business men and women.
GUIDING TINY FOOTSTEPSThe application of Psychology to the raising of children. Parent-Teachers Associations, groups in which parents predominate.
TWO MINUTES TO PLAYAn inspirational address adapted to the mind of the adolescent. Appropriate for commencement address. Mr. Abel understands this group and wins a response where most speakers fail because they do not understand the adolescent's psychology.
Rates vary with the distance to be traveled but are in all cases low. Information as to rates and open dates can be obtained by writing to the Abel Psychological Organization, 7 W. Madison St., Chicago, Ill. We will also be glad to submit the names of men and women, prominent in the civic life of Chicago, who have heard Mr. Abel speak and will vouch for his ability.

The following series of lectures has been organized to meet the needs of individuals, who are interested in gaining a knowledge of how psychology can help them, without having the time to take up intensive study in the field. Because of the widespread interest in psychology, it is often possible for clubs to organize a good sized class in this field. We have so arranged our rates on this series that it is possible for an organization to make considerable money for their own treasury in addition to pro-viding an interesting activity for their members.
The outline submitted is by no means rigid and groups can omit lectures which they feel would not interest their members or provide for additional lectures on subjects which they feel hold a particular appeal.
1. Steel Rails. (An introduction to the field of psychology).2. Fetters of Destiny. (Lecture on habit). 3. The Bogie Man. (Lecture on Fear).4. We all Respect a Bulldog. (Lecture on will power). 5. The Psychology of the Chuckle. (A discussion of wit and humor from the psychologist's standpoint and a consideration of the world's greatest humor).6. Leaves from a Psychologist's Notebook. (A description of some of the strangest of the many strange cases who consult the psychologist).7. Guiding Tiny Footsteps. (The application of psychology to child-raising).8. How to Make Ourselves Unpopular. (A lecture on how not to develop a
good personality).9. Human Nature in the Psychologist's Test Tube. (A lecture on Mental tests). 10. What We Really Do When We Think We Are Thinking. (A lecture on thought and the errors that we all make in thinking).11. Fountainheads of Action. (Why men and women act. Particularly valuable to those in the field of advertising, selling or politics).12. The Dark Continent of the Sub-Conscious Mind. (A lecture on Freud, Psychoanalysis, nervousness, repressions, etc.)
