TOWNS AND CITIES AND STREETS CAN BE BEAUTIFUL; BEAUTY PAYS … Furnishing the city streets is a new idea to most people, but not to Dr. Bedford, sociologist, editor, professor, technician in adult education, director of work relief, author, who told Nineteenth Century Woman's Club about The Beauties of Modern Cities, as picture after picture flashed on the screen with the rapidity of a flipped coin … However, Dr. Bedford gave much more than pictures with a few explanatory words; he gave a sociological lecture illustrated with pictures showing what our surroundings can do to us … He is a believer in decorating all the great outdoors of our cities primarily because he is interested in people and more specifically in influence of physical environment on them … Women's clubs can do much to this end as civic beauty must come from a healthy body politic and he urged people to think of the outside of their homes as their gift to the world, the street as an extension of the homes, as he closed with a series of slides of breath-taking beauty showing the great cities at night under the gorgeous color of light with the ugliness blotted out.

Many have told me his pictures are the finest they have ever seen—and that means a lot here where we have so many fine illustrated lectures.
Fred Merrifield, Pastor, All Souls Liberal Church, Chicago, Ill.
Our people are still exclaiming in awe and delight over his lecture on The Beauties of Modern Cities. The beautiful slides represented near perfection from the side of art; and his lecture nearly carried us off our feet … We hope thousands more all over the country may share in this vision of beauty and become creators with him of the ideal city.
