The Land of Mystery
and
Romance
of a
Lost Empire
Ancient Deserted Cities and Temples, majestic, unexplained, awe-inspiring, have stood for a thousand years. Mystery, grandeur and beauty reign there now as did the mighty kings of their long-dead past.
Intriguing silence and romance hover over a Sacred Well (large enough to hold a church) from which was taken a fortune in gold, jewels, weapons and ornaments and the skeletons of many maidens that had been sacrificed to the God of Rain.
Born On a Farm in Ohio
Dr. Carnes was born and spent his early life on a farm in southern Stark County, Ohio. As a boy, he read of
Lost Civilizations
and
Lost Arts
, which made such a strong impression on his youthful mind, that he decided
when he grew up
he would explore some of the ruins left by these ancient people, and through research find the secrets of their
Lost Arts
.
Later he studied medicine and dentistry. Then engaged in the manufacture of surgical and dental equipment. He later became a manufacturer of cutlery, which finally gave him the longed-for opportunity for Research and Experimental work with metals, chemicals and other materials essential in his attempt to rediscover the
Lost Art of the Old Damascus Sword Blade
.
His final achievements were realized only after many years of research work and faithful study of various sciences including archaeology, metallurgy, ancient history, with travel and exploration.

El Castillo—Temple of Kukul Can on Pyramid.
ANCIENT TEMPLES and PYRAMIDS in tropical YUCATAN present the
greatest mystery
of the Western Hemisphere and possibly of the entire world.
The story of an advanced Civilization which flourished south of the Gulf of Mexico, a
thousand years before Columbus discovered America
.
Under the wise rule of the great
Itzamna
and his followers there had grown a powerful empire on the peninsula of Yucatan. TEMPLES and PYRAMIDS still standing, equalling in grandeur those of Egypt and Rome, and others in ruins proclaim their builders to have been the
World's Master Masons
.
THE MAYAN CIVILIZATION, which flourished in full grandeur throughout the mighty jungles of Central America in an age before Christ, in a time when Europe was wrapped in darkness, when the war hosts of Tigloth-Pileser and Ptolemies ruled the Eastern world, was a civilization proud, self-suffficent, complete, intelligent and in its own fashion without a peer. The marvelous astronomy of the Mayans would shame the Chaldeans or the Greeks. Their gold and silver smithing would have aroused the admiration of a Cellini. Their priestcraft established worship of a 'strange and terrible God'.
(From “The City of the Sacred Well”,
by T. A. Willard
.)
WHO were these people?
WHENCE came they?
WHERE did they go?
HOW, WHEN and WHY did their mighty Cities perish?
CHICHEN-ITZA, city of the SACRED WELL, that HOLY CITY of the EMPIRE OF MAYAPAN, is the setting for the moving pictures and legends of this address.
The Sacred Well
The SACRED WELL, from whose silent depths over one hundred feet below were recovered the jewels of an empire.
The TEMPLE OF THE LAST RITES, on the edge of the abyss where the most beautiful virgins were prepared for the human sacrifice to the
Rain God
, and then cast into the turbid waters below.
Palace of the Warriors and Thousand Columns.
Treasures of An Empire Found
Treasures removed from the Sacred Well include many articles of
hand wrought pure gold
, bowls 12 inches in diameter and beautifully
carved Jade
, Flint-bladed
Sacrificial Knife
with gold handle of entwined
Feathered Serpents
, and the
skeletons
of many
maidens
and captured
warriors, human
sacrifices to the Rain God,
Yum Chac
.
Upon invitation of a prominent citizen of Mexico, representing an outstanding group in the principal cities of Yucatan and Mexico, Dr. W. Stuart Carnes made a goodwill tour of these most interesting countries and as their guest and speaker enjoyed privileges and opportunities for information and observation not generally afforded travellers.
Since the above
Good Will
tour he has made a number of exploration trips to the ruins of these tropical countries.
