D. STANLEY SHAW
ASSOCIATED WITH
THE TALENT UNION, CHICAGO
D. STANLEY SHAW
D. Stanley Shaw possesses, in a remarkable degree, the essential qualifications of a great lecturer. Robust in physique and magnetic in personality, when he steps on the platform he is en rapport at once with his audience, while the undescribable power of his words and the charm of his voice combine to weave the magic spell that holds his hearers enthralled. Nature made him an orator. Life has made him a man who knows. His famous lecture, Johnny on the Spot, touches life at the very points where the average man needs stimulation. It is full of quaint humor, rippling laughter, bounding enthusiasm, sane philosophy and illuminating anecdote. It traverses the fields of business, pleasure, affection and religion, and wherever it touches, you know the lecturer has been on the spot. Information, amusement and inspiration are the never failing concomitants of Johnny on the Spot—and no one goes to sleep while he is talking about Johnny. Mr. Shaw is a stimulus to any community, a moral uplift for adults, and an artist whose word pictures are beacon lights to guide the young to Truth and Righteousness. As a Michigan Farmer put it, I would not have had my two boys miss that lecture for two hundred dollars. For those boys have seen visions, and now have a new grip on life. Shaw is their hero, and 'Johnny on the Spot' is their ideal.
WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY
F. W. Boswell, Mgr. Adrian (Mich.) Chautauqua, says:
D. Stanley Shaw was one of the best in our entire course. He has a pleasing, winning and happy manner. He catches his audience at the beginning and holds them throughout. He intersperses sufficient wit and humor to make his lecture spicy and mirthful; and he sends home an inspiring and electric message in his Johnny on the Spot which gives ambition to the young and added zest to the more mature. His lecture is a winner.
J. F. Rieman, Mgr. Lenawee County (Mich.) Chautauqua:
Managers of Lyceum courses and Chautauqua programs will find in D. Stanley Shaw the kind of talent to make their work a success. He appeared on the program of the Chautauqua under my management this year and more than made good—in fact, his lecture was called equal to the best on the programs. No need to hesitate about placing him on any course.
School Commissioner J. W. Gray:
My Dear Dr. Shaw: I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for the lecture I heard you give at the Chautauqua in Adrian recently. I appreciated it very much for its practicability and absence of affectation and pose. You were among many stars, such as Ex-Governor Hanley, Billy Sunday, and other noted men, but nothing I heard, to my mind, was more effective, instructive and entertaining than your lecture Johnny on the Spot. I would be pleased to hear it again. Both to teachers and educators generally, as well as to the practical hearer, your lecture was, indeed, effective and masterful.
G. R. Murray, Supreme Pres. R. R. A. of Amer., Muskegon, Mich.:
To say that the lecture, Johnny on the Spot, delivered at the Baptist Church in this city was appreciated, is indeed expressing our opinion mildly. The truth of the facts brought out in the lecture appeals to all classes. This, together with the pleasing manner in which the subject is so capably handled, the wholesome humor, the inspiration and enthusiasm it creates, makes it one that the discriminating public should not hesitate to favor with attention. The sentiment of his hearers in the city of Muskegon is that should D. Stanley Shaw return, we would not have an auditorium large enough to hold the audience.
J. B. Masters, Supt. Schools, Rapid City, Mich:
The lecture, Johnny on the Spot, by D. Stanley Shaw, at the Town Hall Saturday night, was certainly an intellectual treat to the people of our little village. My own regret is that every man, woman and child in our town did not hear the lecture, because it contains just the elements that tend to make a better type of citizen.
Prof. H. G. Avery, Supt. Schools, Lyons, Mich.:
I am glad to make this statement, in which is given the opinion of many: D. S. Shaw's lecture alone was worth the price of the entire course and was by far the best number. I shall be pleased to see him billed here again.
Rev. G. E. Wright, White Pigeon, Mich.:
D. Stanley Shaw delivered Johnny on the Spot to a very appreciative audience. Many remarked, The best lecture ever delivered in White Pigeon. I can personally testify to its excellent merit. Mr. Shaw has a lecture worth while and knows how to deliver the goods.
Prof. H. A. Wood, Bangor, Mich.:
The lecture given by Dr. Shaw last night was keenly enjoyed by all. He is a forceful, talented speaker, with a heart full of a message to everyone. We need more men of his stamp.
Rev. Chas. W. Gardner, Kalkaska, Mich.:
Recently I had the great pleasure of listening to a number in the entertainment course in Rapid City, Mich., a lecture called Johnny on the Spot, by D. Stanley Shaw, and unsolicited, I desire to express my appreciation. The lecture was bristling with wit and humor and carried a spirit of clean, healthy, wholesome and uplifting sentiment that could not fail to be appreciated in any community. Mr. Shaw is an artist in his line of delivery and readily commands the entire attention of his audience from first to last.
M. C. Murray, Prin. High School, Michigan City, Ind.
Dr. D. Stanley Shaw is an orator of unusual force and eloquence. His lecture is a delightful and inspiring blend of amusing anecdote, brilliant wit and profound philosophy, and in it the speaker presents a sane and complete program for rational living. It is just the kind of lecture that I should like all of my friends to hear.
Addison, Mich., Courier:
D. Stanley Shaw's lecture delivered here last evening, was spicy, entertaining and elevating—one of the kind that remains with us after the lecture hour is over.
News Chronicle, Muskegon, Mich:
Scintillating with wit, keeping his audience in continual good humor by laugh-provoking stories which he seemed to draw forth from an unlimited storehouse, yet withal bearing a message to each and every one, which he brought home to his hearers with scholarly logic and the power of his eloquence, D. Stanley Shaw, taking as his subject Johnny on the Spot, pleased all who were present last evening at the First Baptist Church. It is a certainty that should Mr. Shaw come again to Muskegon, his audience would be several times larger than the one present last evening. Mr. Shaw has made a place for himself here.
Daily Standard, Ionia, Mich.:
Notwithstanding the severe storm last evening, a fine audience greeted Dr. Shaw at the Church of Christ. His lecture was filled with rich, spicy witticisms and good humor, bringing forth much applause. Dr. Shaw is a natural orator of true Christian type, and the Endeavorers are to be congratulated in securing so able a speaker on their course.
Rev. R. D. Freeman, Quincy, Mich.:
D. Stanley Shaw delivered his lecture in our village to an audience of about 300 people, who greatly enjoyed it. We heartily commend him to people who desire happy entertainment, combined with wholesome instruction.
Advertiser, Holly, Mich.:
The second number on the M. E. Lecture Course was filled by D. Stanley Shaw with his popular lecture, Johnny on the Spot. He gave an intensely practical and inspiring address filled with fresh, yeasty ideas, definitely aimed, that he somehow has the faculty of making stick. He is a magnetic speaker, with an excellent voice and engaging platform manner. Comment was universally favorable.
Rev. F. M. Field, Flint, Mich.:
We have only words of commendation for Mr. Shaw and his lecture, Johnny on the Spot. Everyone was pleased. We especially admire his skillful transition from one emotion to another, mingling the serious with the humorous and teaching great truths in connection with his bright humor.
Times Journal, Deerfield, Mich.:
D. Stanley Shaw gave his versatile, scholarly and instructive lecture before a highly appreciative audience Friday evening. He proves himself the best type of Johnny by his instant thereness.
Rev. Allen J. Blair, Jackson, Mich.:
D. Stanley Shaw delivered his lecture, Johnny on the Spot, in my church. The audience was unqualified in its expression of appreciation. Dr. Shaw is a lecturer of unusual ability.
Prof. E. M. Halliday, University of Illinois:
I was glad of the opportunity of listening to the lecture, Johnny on the Spot, by Dr. Shaw. The excellence of what he has to say, combined with the ginger and snap with which he says it, are bound to secure an attentive hearing.
Newaygo, Mich., Republican:
The lecture by D. Stanley Shaw in the Opera House last Thursday evening was greatly enjoyed. Mr. Shaw's aim is not only to be humorous, but also to deliver a message of high moral import, particularly to the young.
Forum, Whitehall, Mich.:
The lecture given in the M. E. Church last Tuesday night by Dr. Shaw was one of the best numbers on the course up to date. His lecture was full of mirth, good sense, logic and oratory.
No empty seats when you have Shaw.
