PRESS COMMENTS
Nothing more fortunate for our musical culture at this juncture can be imagined than the plan of the St. Louis Grand Opera Committee. Opera for the People has the right ring. Music must be brought to the masses if it is to endure as the first of the cultural arts.—
Richard Spamer, Globe-Democrat.
The Grand Opera Committee's announcement of the repertoire and casts for the Odeon season constitutes a dependable promise of genuinely worthy opera worthily presented. The list of guest stars and principals of the San Carlo Company is undeniably attractive. This is an inviting prospect.—
Ripley D. Saunders, Post-Dispatch.
A big city is measured by its population; a great city by its influence. St. Louis is already a big city. It is destined to be a great city, and its greatness will be founded upon its culture. The art of music is one of the highest achievements of the human soul and no city or country can claim to be even with the world without it.
The Grand Opera Committee is in the arena as the champion of this great art. It believes it represents the hope and ambition of this city and its fervent desire to become a great musical center.—
Homer Moore, Republic.
The St. Louis Times congratulates the Grand Opera Committee on the fine prospects for a tremendously successful opera season.
The Opera Committee has succeeded in bringing together a great organization that will give the best of grand opera at reasonable prices. St. Louis followers of grand opera will secure a first class article at a much lower price than usual.—
Times.
The project of giving the best grand opera at reasonable prices with every indication of success, is likely to have value in the direction of placing St. Louis on the musical map right next to New York.—
Star.
We venture to predict that the opera season inaugurated at the Odeon, November 9th, will do more to popularize grand opera in our city than any of its predecessors. A well balanced company of even merit will render a repertoire comprising some of the greatest music dramas ever written at a scale of prices enabling thousands to attend who heretofore had to deny themselves this pleasure.—
Westliche Post.
The selection by the Grand Opera Committee of a number of the older operas for production in St. Louis, in preference to some of the later compositions, is to be commended. Many of the older works have stood the test of time and objective criticism, while their successors have, in many instances, not yet been subjected to other tests than that of transient popularity.—
Amerika.
