THE JACKSON JUBILEE SINGERS
The rhythm and character of songs of the colored race are a relic and an inheritance combining joy, superstition, and religion. Their jubilee chants, plantation melodies, camp-meeting shouts, and spirituals are authentic in every detail, when offered by the Jackson Jubilee Singers.
Of special interest is this announcement that John Garth, III, original baritone of this now famous ensemble, has been prevailed upon to make another tour with the Jackson Jubilee Singers. John Garth's singing career began with this group, from which position he was selected for a principal part, that of the Undertaker, in
Porgy and Bess
on Broadway. Tour of the British Isles and France followed. Garth studied for a time at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has been soloist with the Ford
Dixie Eight
octette, and other leading radio programs. He has appeared in numerous New York musicals, including, The Dream, Swingin', Helen of Troy as
Achilles
and others. In December 1941,
Porgy and Bess
was revived in Boston with John Garth again in the role of the Undertaker, and January 1942, moved to the Majestic Theatre, New York City. John Garth is recognized as a singing-actor of rare ability. His beautiful baritone voice will be heard in solo, and with the ensemble to which he has always added much inspiration and brilliancy.
All of the Jackson Jubilee Singers are trained musicians, possessing the power and finish acquired only by long professional experience, yet singing and entertaining always with that abandon and spontaneity which so richly characterizes the artistry of their race.
Their apparently limitless repertoire includes many of the old favorites such as
Roll, Jordan Roll,
Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,
Da's a Jubilee,
Climb Up, Ye Little Chillun
,
When the Moon Swings Low
; as well as scores of tuneful melodies, that, although not generally familiar, are sure to linger long because of their rhythmic excellence. Many of their songs have been taken in the crude state and harmonized by modern composers.
Selections from
Show Boat,
Hallelujah,
Green Pastures,
Emperor Jones,
Porgy and Bess
and other famous Negro productions are offered.
Juba Dance,
Barcarolle,
and Percy Grainger's concert arrangement of
Turkey in the Straw,
for piano;
De Glory Road,
I Got Plenty o' Nothin',
Why Darkies Were Born
and
Lazy River,
are representative of a limited number of solos usually included.
Programs of musical excellence, works of the best known Negro composers, gripping dramatizations, and a great variety of entertaining diversions, make this attraction unique, and one of the most delightful on the American stage.
A highly satisfactory number. Pleased the students, faculty and townspeople. An excellent program for Summer School.
