The Bostonia Sextette Club
MR C. L. STAATS Clarinet Soloist and Director
This celebrated chamber musical organization has been continuously before the public since its foundation in 1898 by Mr. C. L. Staats. Its record of hundreds of appearances throughout the country is one of enviable distinction. In the great concert halls of the large cities, from its home center of Boston straight across the country to the Pacific slope, its annually recurring tours have been triumphs, both with the musicianly informed and with lay auditors comprising their audiences.
In the fall of 1906, the occasion of the Club's first appearance in Chicago, the press awarded them the distinction of comparison not only with the Kneisels, but the world-famous Flonzaleys, as well. No finer music criticisms have ever been printed than were elicited by this gala appearance.
The Club's programs are invariably of high artistic merit: not strictly classical nor yet trashy or cheap. They appeal alike to musician and layman, tuneful and worth-while from beginning to end.
No piano is used by the Club, and reliance is placed upon the artistry of its personnel, each a recognized artist in his own right. Programs are built with the idea of pleasing all the diverse elements of a community and a concert by the Bostonias will prove an event of first importance in every center.
Assisting, during the forthcoming tour, will be a brilliant soprano soloist, whose work is elsewhere described in this circular. On the page following will be found some expressions by competent authorities.
Mr. Staats is beyond question America's best known clarinetist. His career has been a distinguished one, commencing in a little Conn. village as a member of the village band and covering distinguished service as leading player with the most noted musical organizations of both America and Europe. He was the first native American to go to Paris to study the clarinet and the first to introduce the French school for the instrument to the American public.
Mr. Staats has the endorsements of the most notable orchestral conductors of the time. He has filled the responsible positions of first clarinetist of the Royal Italian Opera; of Her Majesty's Theatre, London; of the Jardin d'Acclimatation, Paris; at the great Casino, in Ostend, with Sousa's Band, and for years a prominent member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
The solos and obligatos of Mr. Staats are magnificently rendered and form a unique and artistic portion of the program.
For more than twenty years, Mr. Staats' great work has been the direction of his Sextette Club and this Club is now the only HIGH GRADE organization touring the country that has in its membership a full quintette of strings and also a solo clarinet.
Miss Reynolds' beautiful voice has won for her a place among the singers of first rank in America. Gifted by nature with a fine musical sense and a clear and pure voice, her training has rounded out her ability. Her benefits have been many, including advantages with the finest instructors of Boston, her home city. Her public appearances have been frequent and her success, the past two years, as soprano soloist with the Club, has been so great that the management is indeed fortunate in being able to present her as permanent soloist with the Bostonias.
