A cordial and appreciative audience greeted the Ripon College Glee Club which presented a program at the First Congregational Church Monday evening, under the auspices of the church school. The excellent chorus work of the club, as well as the attractive vocal and instrumental solos, won the marked favor of the audience.
The work of the organization reflected a great deal of credit upon its virile and vigorous director, Harold Chamberlain, who has been on the faculty of the Ripon School of Music since 1925. Mr. Chamberlain is known to Oshkosh music lovers, having been soloist
JOSEPH LISKA Violin Soloist
at the Sunday morning services at the First Congregational Church for some time.
The program, presented by the young men Monday evening was one of unusually high quality and interest, and so attractively diversified as to meet the approval of the most critical music lover. It was arranged in two parts, the first part including several standard male choruses, vocal trios and instrumental solos. The second part was made up of an informal group of songs by the glee club, with several special solo features.
James Hudson, a clarinetist of unusual talent, gave an excellent rendition of Schubert's Serenade. Alvin Brooks, who won second place in the Wisconsin Musical tournament at Madison two years ago, played MacFayden's Valse Brillante, in a most artistic manner, and Joseph Liska, violinist, showed unusual ability in his interpretation of the Polonaise, by Mlynarski.
Among the chorus numbers, which were given with the zest and interest that only a college glee club can put into a selection, were Pilgrim's Chorus, from Tannhauser, Mother Love, by Voigt, Rolling Down to Rio, by German, and Cossack War Song, by Parker.
A selection from the Vagabond King, which just completed a long and successful run in Chicago, was one of the most enjoyable features of the second part of the program. In this number Mr. Chamberlain took the solo part. Several of the late song hits were presented by Frederick Maynard and Hugh Williams, and excellent solos were sung by Carl Eichstedt, Lloyd Wescott, James Gilruth and Frederick Maynard.
GLEE CLUB TRIO, 1927
Harold Chamberlain
Harold Chamberlain, who came to Ripon in the fall of 1925 to join the faculty of the Ripon School of Music, is uniquely qualified to teach the art of singing in all its branches. His father, the late William B. Chamberlain, was for two years an assistant to the widely known Mme. Seiler, of Philadelphia and afterwards was a favorite tenor soloist in oratorio and recital. The elder Mr. Chamberlain was for many years at the head of the vocal department of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and became not only famous in his line of endeavor but was dearly beloved by all those who came in contact with him.
Harold Chamberlain began his career at an early age and was a boy soprano soloist at Grace Episcopal Church at Oak Park, Ill., in 1902 and 1903. At the age of fifteen he sang the soprano solos in Christoforus, with a chorus of 100 and orchestra. In 1908, Mr. Chamberlain was soloist with the Oberlin College Glee Club which sang in New York, St. Paul, Chicago and Minneapolis. Musical critics of these cities were unanimous in their favorable review of the young singer who was then still in his teens. Since that time he has studied under Frederic Bruegger, who is unquestionably one of the finest teachers in the country and also Edoardo Sacerdote, who was assistant conductor of the Chicago Opera Co. and whom Mme. Melba once said was the world's greatest teacher. His most recent study has been at the Northwestern University School of Music under the well known teacher, Walter Allen Stults.
He has also held important positions as soloist in some of the largest churches of the metropolitan centers and has also directed choirs and large choruses which has given him a varied and invaluable experience.
Mr. Chamberlain has already established a name for himself at Ripon and has won a place in the hearts of Ripon students and citizens alike. His vigorous and virile personality is easily recognized in his direction of the Glee Club and the admiration and respect of the members of the organization for him is also perfectly apparent.

PART I
Pilgrim's Chorus: Tannhauser
Wagner
Once more, dear home, I with rapture behold thee,
And greet the fields that so sweetly enfold thee;
Thou pilgrim staff may rest thee now,
Since I to God have fulfilled my vow.
By penance sore I have atoned and God's pure law my heart hath owned;
My pains hath He with blessing crowned,
To God my song shall aye resound
Once more, dear home, I with rapture behold thee,
And greet the fields that so sweetly enfold thee,
Yes, pilgrim staff, thy toil is o'er,
I'll serve my God for evermore,
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, for evermore, for evermore.

Cossack War Song
Parker
Hup! Hup! Hup! Hup! High the Cossack's heart is beating
Now he hears the battle call; Hup! Hup! Hup! Hup!
Sweeter far to him such greeting than the song's melodious fall.
Hurrah! Hurrah! When his charger wildly neighing seeks the din,
Swings he high his gleaming lance to fight and win!
Hurrah! Hurrah! Hup! Hup! Hup! Hup!
Ne'er to him is rest inviting after gory victory won;
Quick he leaps into the saddle for another glorious run.
Hurrah! Hurrah! Never thought of fear o'ercomes him midst the roar;
He, when Death frowns darkly on him, laughs the more!
Hurrah! Hurrah! Hup! Hup! Hup! Hup!
Onward into battle, brothers, while our ranks are bravely filled,
Hearts that now beat high, tomorrow in Death lie cold and stilled.
Hurrah! Hurrah! Tho' at last our only portion be the grave,
Close beside us still our foemen we shall have!
Hurrah! Hurrah! Ha!

Mother Love
Voigt
As in a dream I yet remember a happy time now far away,
When still a mother's gazes tender watched over every youthful joy.
O Mother faithful, mother kind, how fondly bear I thee in mind!
The infant soul thy love has guided to virtue, right and faithfulness,
That sin and shame my heart avoided and gavest all thy child to bless.
O Mother faithful, mother fond, no joy I knew, thy love beyond!
O may thy blessing fail me never, while yet a time I travail here,
And when all strife and toil are over, may thy dear face my vision cheer;
Still shine upon me from above, thy tender gaze of mother love!
Rolling Down to Rio
German
I've never sailed the Amazon, I've never reached Brazil;
But the Don and the Magdalena, they can go there when they will!
Ah! Yes, weekly from Southampton, great steamers white and gold,
Go rolling down to Rio, roll down, roll down to Rio!
And I'd like to roll to Rio some day before I'm old!
I'd like to roll to Rio some day before I'm old!
I've never seen a Jaguar, nor yet an Armadillo,
Dillowing in his armour, and I s'pose I never will!
Ah! Unless I go to Rio these wonders to behold,
Go rolling down to Rio, roll really down to Rio!
Oh! I'd love to roll to Rio some day before I'm old!

Unfold Ye Portals, The Redemption
Gounod
Unfold, unfold, unfold ye portals everlasting,
With welcome to receive Him ascending on high.
Behold the King of Glory; He mounts up through the sky,
Back to the heavenly mansions hasting.
Unfold, unfold, unfold, for lo, the King comes high.
But who is He, the King of Glory!
He who death overcame, the Lord in battle mighty.
But who is He, the King of Glory?
Of hosts He is the Lord, of angels and of powers
The King of Glory is the King of the Saints.
Unfold, unfold, unfold ye portals everlasting,
With welcome to receive Him ascending on high,
Behold the King of Glory! He mounts up through the sky,
Back to the heavenly mansions hasting.
Unfold, unfold, unfold, for lo, the King comes nigh.
