THIS CLEVELAND OF OURS
(Cleveland's Who's Who)
Raymond J. Jeffreys, who has had a traveler, adventurer, soldier—and finally settled down in Cleveland as a business executive and lecturer—was born in Columbiana, O., Jan. 23, 1896.
He entered Mt. Union College in 1915. When war was declared, he enlisted in the Air Service of the U. S. Army. He received the rudiments of army life in America and England, but was trained principally in Tours, France. He served on the Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel and Toul fronts. After the signing of the armistice, he went into Germany, with the Army of Occupation until the fall of 1919. After the war he re-enlisted in the Officers Reserve as a First Lt., Staff Specialist.
Lt. Jeffreys returned to his studies at Mount Union College, where he specialized in journalism, and was graduated with honors in 1920. Thereafter he served as city editor of The Alliance Review and then resigned that position to become a feature story writer. Subsequently he bought and operated a chain of newspapers in Columbiana Co., O., which his brother Howard took over in 1922.
Mr. Jeffreys then started on a thrilling two-year adventure
around the world
by automobile, visiting many countries as a Foreign Correspondent and
feature story writer
for a New York newspaper syndicate. This was the first trip of its kind ever attempted … In 1924 he began the publication of a motor magazine called
Luck o' the Road,
in St. Louis. He sold this at the end of about a year, and went into Lyceum and Chautauqua work in Chicago.
Mr. Jeffreys came to Cleveland in 1925, and in the following year organized the firm of R. J. Jeffreys & Co. Later he formed a number of other corporations, which he headed as president, and became widely recognized as a business man of pronounced ability and sound judgment. He still travels extensively, using an airplane whenever possible.
CITED AS A
100% SOLDIER
BY COMMANDING OFFICER
... I built up a tremendous admiration for his abilities intelligence and winingness to work. In fact in all those things that go to make a good soldier and a fine man, he measured up 100%. There is no man I met in the Army in whom I would have a greater faith or trust.
Walter J. Enright, Com. Officer, U. S. Air Service, A.E.F., France.
Makes Good Record In College Says
Prexy
Raymond J. Jeffreys is a graduate of Mt. Union College. During his College course he not only made a good record in his studies, but took a great interest in student activities, particularly the
Dynamo
, our college paper, which he edited most successfully, and the
Unonian
, the College annual of which he was also editor. His College course was interrupted by the war, in which he rendered valuable service as an aviator, and then came back to graduate in 1920. Since leaving college he has made a success as a journalist and lecturer, and has demonstrated the fact that he has a gift for discovering material of human interest.

HE CAN TAKE IT
When Raymond J. Jeffreys filed his expense account with the Secretary of State again this year, after his second defeat for U. S. Congressman-at-large, he listed a deficit of $506.05 which he said, will be paid in full out of my
soldier's bonus
.
The suggestion is typical of the dynamic little fellow who has spoken in Bucyrus many times. We hold the highest respect for him. He is one candidate who can take it on the chin and smile.
When he was defeated two years ago he submitted an expense account which listed all of the
extra woes
of being a candidate. It attracted nation-wide attention.

LOOK AT THE FUN HE HAD AS CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS
When Raymond J. Jeffreys turned in his statement of expenditures to the retary of State, as required by law, when he was the high
runner-up
for U. S. Congressman-at-large in 1936, he made the following absolutely truthful report of what it cost him NOT to be elected.
(This statement was published in hundreds of papers all over the country and requests for copies have been coming in ever since).
I was donated $300 worth of radio time, $40 worth of newspaper mats and $90 in cash. Spent $601.94 for travel, postage and other expenses … Took 7 ½ months from my business; slept 17 nights in my car and two nights on a park bench; drove all night 6 times to keep engagements; ran out of gas 19 times; carried gasoline in a can a total of 23 miles; wore out my car; was towed in twice; blew out 7 tires; burned out a battery; broke a piston rod and drove more than 40,000 miles. Picked up 71 hoboes and 2 girls; thumbed my way 1,752 miles and was broke most of the time. Held two babies while their mothers campaigned for me—and didn't have one chance to kiss a widow … Drank 371 cups of rotten coffee; ate 134 terrible meals; shook hands with more than 20,000 people; made over 500 talks; drew designs on a quilt for a Ladies' Aid Society; talked enough to make in print 1,000 volumes; lost 13 lbs. in weight; lost 1,258 hours of sleep and almost lost my wife… Was promised enough votes to win the Presidency, and was
nosed out
for U. S. Congressman-at-large by 11,000 votes—but I made thousands of wonderful friends, learned a lot about geography, and had lots of fun.
... Unique, with the charm of adventure and the romance of wanderlust.—

SUCCESSFULLY HOLDS ALL AGES
We had all of the students from the fourth grade to the twelfth grade of the High School, and Lt. Raymond J. Jeffreys was able to handle his subject so successfully that he held all ages for nearly an hour and a half—carrying them into fits of humor, breathless thrills and absorbed interest.

Was Received by Government Officials of Mexico
After returning from his thrilling adventure into that mysterious southern country of Mexico, which holds such a charm, alluring fascination, and to some a dreaded horror, Mr. Jeffreys pulled the curtains aside and gave the Realty Board a brief glimpse into that hot bed of political upheaval and revolution, so much discussed and so little understood.
In terms forceful because of their brevity and scope, Mr. Jeffreys pictured Mexico at its best and at its worst. He gave his hearers a colorful glimpse into the whirl of politics, into the dull drab existence of the miserable peons and the high life of the Spanish aristocracy. He presented a keen insight into Mexico's marvelous natural resources and her latent possibilities.

LECTURES ARE ENLIGHTENING AND ENTERTAINING

His experiences during his many unusual adventures were among the most unique and interesting that I have ever been privileged to hear, and his humorous presentation of them made the evening entertainment one never to be forgotten.
His subject material is very enlightening as well as entertaining, and his enthusiastic and optimistic personality gives a forcefulness to his stories of adventure that holds the attention of the most difficult.

The Type of Real Representative American Needed On the Platform Today
I have known Raymond J. Jeffreys since boyhood and find him to be a man of sterling worth. He is honest, straightforward and courageous ... typical of the keen cut Twentieth Century American.
His college training, newspaper experiences, Army service, varied travels and world adventures, makes him exceedingly well fitted for the lecture platform. His vim and dash, along with his keen understanding of human nature and of world problems, give spice, variety and entertainment to his lectures. But above all, he has a message in every lecture, something that will benefit every community.

(This statement was published in hundreds of papers all over the country and requests for copies have been coming in ever since). I was donated $300 worth of radio time, $40 worth of newspaper mats and $90 in cash.
