MISS EUGENIE DUBOIS as The Queen


Miss Eugenie DuBois, playing heavy and character roles with The Avon Players, has been associated with such well-known Broadway managers as the Shuberts, Chas. F. Wagner, Henry B. Harris, Wm. A. Brady and George M. Cohan.

Among the promment stars she has supported are Robert B. Mantell, Harry Beresford, Madge Kennedy.  Sidney Blackmer and Lionel Atwill.

The Shakespearean roles in which Miss DuBois has been most successful are Lady Macbeth, Portia, The Queen in Hamlet and Lady Ann in Richard III.


ROBERT SELMAN as Lorenzo


Robert Selman was born of a theatrical family and has always been associated with the stage.  At the age of three he made his first appearance, later he toured the West Indies and South America with his father's company.  He attended the University of Georgia, where he was promment in Little Theatre circles.


W. G. COLVIN as Tabal


Mr. William Colvin's stage career began with The Lyceum Theatre Company.  For many years he was a feature comedian of The Oliver Morosco production of Los Angeles, and was later starred in The Bonnie Brier Bush.  Mr. Colvin is well known in pictures and comes from Los Angeles, where he has been fulfilling a contract with The William Fox Studios.

Miss Alma Baker, the leading woman for The Avor Players, is a graduate of the University of California.  Here she began her preparation for the stage, taking a post graduate course in speech.  Her first engagement was at the Passadina Playhouse, under the direction of Guilmore Brown.  After playing numerous stock engagements in the West, Miss Baker came cast.  Her latest engagement has been with The Irwine Players, in New york.  Here she was discovered by The Avon Players management and chosen to support Mr. Lewis.

MR. FREDERICK G. LEWIS needs no introduction to those who have been in close touch with important events in New York and abroad.  Mr. Lewis is considered by many to be the leading exponent of Shakespearean and classic Drama extant.  Below is a brief resume of his activities in the theatre:

In 1900—Played Ragnor Brovic in The Masterbuilder (Ibsen), at the Carnegie Lyceum.  1903—Oswald Alying in Ibsen's Ghost, Manhattan Theatre, New York City.  September, 1903—Orlando in As You Like It at the same theatre, with Henrietta Crosman.  1905—Starred in The Raven, as Edgar Allen Poe. Knickerbocker Theatre in 1905—Starred by Maurice Campbell, as Arnold Rubek in Ibsen's When We Dead Awake.  Latter part of 1905 joined Sothern and Marlowe Company.  Played Mercutio—Don Pedro, in Much Ado About Nothing: Horatio, Hamlet; Bassanio, Merchant of Venice: Orsino in Twelfth Night, at the Knickerbocker Theatre.  January and February, 1907—Played Manasseh in John the Baptist; Charles VII in Jeanne d'Are; Mercutio, in Romeo and Juliet; Horatio in Hamlet, etc. April, 1907—Made first appearance in London, England, Waldorf Theatre (now the Strand) as Charles VII in Jeane d'Arc, followed by Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet; Bassanio in Merchant of Venice; Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing; Horatio in Hamlet; Orsino in Twelfth Night; Orlando in As You Like It; Sir Edwin Caskoden in When Knighthood Was in Flower.  1907–1908—Leading man with Julia Marlowe—Romeo in Romeo and Juliet; Brandon in When Knighthood Was in Flower.  1908—Played Stephen Bovd in That Little Affair, at Boyd's.  September, 1908—played Michael Dean in Mater, by Percy Mackaye, management Henry Miller, Savoy Theatre, New York.  Toured with Wilton Lackaye, as Phillip Ames in The Battle.  Rejoined E. H. Sothern, 1909, and in March played at Daly's Theatre, DeMauprat in Richelieu, and the old repertoire as heretofore mentioned.  October, 1909—Played Vassili in On the Eve, at the Hudson Theatre.  December, 1909—Berkeley Lycium, Pavail in Know Thyself, with Arnold Daly.  December, 1910—Sothern and Marlowe old repertoire, with the addition of Macbeth, in which he played Macduff.  April, 1914—Sothern and Marlowe.  Garrick Theatre, Chicago, Charlemagne.  1916—Toured (featured) in The Gest's production of The Wanderer, The Prodigal Son, at the Mahattan Opera House, New York City, played this part for four seasons.  1922—Played Horatio in Hamlet with John Barrymore.  1923—Empire Theatre, played in Pasteur (lead) with Henry Miller.  1923—Sothern and Marlowe again old repertoire with the addition of Cymbeline, in which Mr. Lewis played lachimo.  Then in succession came Joseph Surface in Mr. Sam'l Insull's wonderful production of The School for Scandal, in Chicago; then the following season played the same part at The Little Theatre, New York, and in the meantime, or prior to this, played Louis XV in Madam Pompadour at the Martin Beck Theatre, being the premier performance at that place; then came Sir William Hamilton, in Frail Emma, the story of Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton.




HAROLD SELMAN as Launcelot


Of Mr. Harold Selman's eighteen years in the theatre, the earliest were given to Shakespeare, where he developed a keen understanding of the great master's comedy roles.  Mr. Selman has played Launcelot Gobbo, the part he will play with the Avon Players many times, notably in New York, with Jacob Adler, the great tragedian.  As a boy he appeared with Tim Murphy in The Carpetbagger, Mark Twain's Puddin' Head Wilson and William Owen in his classic repertoir.  Mr. Selman has appeared with Mary Pickford, Madam Besson, of the Comedie Francais; Lowel Sherman, and for many years has been well known as a vaudeville headliner, doing his quaint character studies.

Mr. Joseph Selman for many years has been prominent in the casts of New York successes, playing long run with such attractions as The High Road, with Mrs. Fiske, at the Hudson Theatre; Three Faces East, at the Cohan and Harris; The Tavern, with George M. Cohan; The Bat, and many others.  Mr. Selman has been starred in Richard the Third, The Prisoner of Zenda, and has toured the United States, Canada and the West Indies with his own companies.


MISS DUNAWAY as Nerrissa


Miss Marjory Dunaway is a brilliant and talented young actress, who has been chosen by The Avon Players to play the ingenue roles.  She was tutored by Mrs. Hicks Curry, Boston, and us a graduate of Emerson School of Boston; she then spent two seasons in stock, her latest engagement being under Charles Wagner's management in The Night Hostess.

Miss Dunaway will play the important role of Nerrissa, for which she is well suited.


JAMES CONRAD as The Duke


Mr. James Conrad is an actor of long experience and sterling ability.  He is a valued member of The Avon Players.




A GLANCE at the careers of these players, a brief outline of which is contained in this folder, will convince you of their high standing and fitting experiences in the theatre.  It has been possible to secure this talent only because of the desire of these artists to continue the highest type of work possible in the spoken drama.

Mr. Joseph Selman, The Avon Players' manager, has been convinced by the constant suggestion of educational heads that a fine organization, producing Shakespearean and classic plays, was not only necessary to the student, but would also fulfill the desire of the public at large for a better type of entertainment.

In equipping The Avon Players, Mr. Selman has spared no expense in order to have a production as fine as anything done in New York, Chicago, or any of the larger cities.  All scenery, properties and a complete unit for stage lighting is carried.  The scenery and drapes are by the Atlanta Scenic Company, all painting being done personally by Don Carlos DuBois.  The costumes, which are rich and gorgeous, are spplied by Christie, of New York, and Madam Charlotte.

The Avon Players Company will each year produce a series of plays nearest the desire of the educational heads and the general public.

This season THE AVON PLAYERS will produce two plays, presenting Mr. FREDERICK G. LEWIS as Shylock in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, and HAMLET.
