BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
D
R. EUGENE MAY, has been in almost every nook and corner of the world, has
crossed the ocean many times,
and won
international fame
as a traveler, explorer, mountain climber, writer, author and accomplished lecturer. He has climbed the most notable mountains of the globe and mastered the
mighty Matterhorn.
Few have excelled him in
breadth of survey
and
wonderful powers of description.
Thoroughly educated, long a teacher of elocution, many years a Chautauqua Superintendent, a graduate of the first class in the C. L. S. C. a trained thinker and scholar, he is amply qualified for the great work of the platform. He was one of the first bicyclers to tour the
Yellowstone
upon a wheel. He was the last independent traveler to return from
Cuba
just previous to our war with Spain, which gave him great prominence at the time and drew him to the White House
in consultation with President McKinley.
Dr. May has been lecturing for
fifteen years
and more, the last seven years continuously. His success has been
marked and remarkable.
He has lectured in
every state of the Union,
often recalled, even to repeat the same lecture the second, third, and in one instance the
fifth
time. He is a tried lecturer, in the prime of life. He does not pose as a funny man but yet
spices
every lecture with
wit
and
humor
rendering it easy and pleasant for all to listen.
SUBJECTS:
1.
With a Knapsack through Switzerland and up the Matterhorn Mountain.
An account of a journey across Switzerland on foot. A description of peoples and customs, Swiss liberty and government, and wonderful scenery. Thrilling and amusing incidents in by-ways and unfrequented places. As a climax, the ascent of the mighty Matterhorn Mountain. Pronounced everywhere one of the very greatest lectures on the American platform.
2.
Come-Up-Similing.
Dr. May's latest lecture. In a new vein, combining humor, anecdote, incident, description, pathos and philosophy in a rare combination. A treatment of happiness and good nature, it is the product of a life time. Regarded by many as Dr. May's masterpiece, the peroration alone worth the price of admission.
3.
The Passion Play of Oberammergau.
Dr. May has seen the Passion Play five times in the last two decades. In 1900 he went to Europe specially to study it and prepare a lecture upon it. It is a great theme worthy of the greatest powers of the greatest lecturer. Dr. May's lecture makes a profound impression.
4.
The Land of Shillalah and Shamrock-Ireland from Cork to Causeway.
This is considered the Doctor's most amusing travel lecture. It is the only one in which he treats of the ocean voyage. Ireland's cities, scenery, legends, poetry, industries and the Irish Question are carefully gone over. The lecturer is unprejudiced and eminently just to Catholics. Irish wit and drollery has a large share of attention, and the recitation of
The Widow Malone
is a uniquely entertaining feature.
5.
In the Heart of the Sierras-the Yosemite Valley.
California and an eventful journey to the famed Yosemite. Sublimest of scenery. Thrilling mountain experiences and the rescue of a snow bound man. Glissading immense. Henry, the entertaining German companion. A palatial world for the word painter. The greatest scenery in the world in so small a space.
6.
Glimpses of Paul in Rome.
Specially prepared for Sunday delivery. Appropriate at any time. Repeated visits to the most interesting city in the world, with a study of Paul in Rome from his entrance on the Appian Way to his martyrdom. His approach, entrance, place where he preached, his hired house, his prison, and the site of his martyrdom. A mingled study of the Eternal City with the eternal truth and the mightest Roman of them all.
Allentown, Pa. E. R. Wilson, Gen. Sec'y, Y. M. C. A.
Dr. May's powers of description are very fine. No man or woman can hear this lecture,
Glimpses of Paul in Rome,
without a desire to live a better life. The audience was large and appreciative.
OTHER LECTURES.
Cuba Struggling Into Light.
Under Fire From Vesuvius.
With a Bicycle Through the Yellowstone.
With a Row Boat on the River Rhine.
Wandering and Wondering in the Caverns of the World. And Other Subjects.

Dr. Eugene May delivered at Silver Lake Assembly two most charming and thrilling lectures during the present session. His ascent of the Matterhorn is inimitable in every respect.

PRESS NOTICES
London, (Ont.) Free Press.
One of the
MOST INTERESTING
lectures ever delivered in the Auditorium, was given last evening by Dr. Eugene May of Washington, D. C. the noted traveler. Switzerland and the Matterhorn proved both instructive and thrilling. The audience was very large, and there are few who would not like to hear the
LECTURE REPEATED
.
Fargo, (N. D.,) Forum.
Dr. Eugene May delivered his magnificent lecture,
The Matterhorn,
at the opera house last night before a large, intelligent and delighted audience. Although this was
THE THIRD TIME
that the Doctor delivered the lecture in this city, Fargoites seem to find it ever new.
Tacoma, (Wash.,) Union.
The Ninth Street Theater held a large audience last evening who sat the greater part of the time
SPELL-BOUND AND ENTRANCED
. Members of the Arts and Literary Leagues, lawyers, teachers and clergymen formed a large portion of the assemblage. Dr. May's lecture proved most entertaining and the evening was a rare treat.
Helena, (Mont.,) Independent.
Dr. May is one of the most brilliant men in the lecture field to-day. The audience greatly enjoyed his rare word painting and his
MASTERLY DESCRIPTION
of the ascent of the Matterhorn. He is requested to
REPEAT HIS LECTURE
at the earliest date possible.
Atlanta, (Ga.,) Daily News.
Dr. May's
ELOCUTION AND ORATORY ARE THE MOST FINISHED
and
PERFECT
Atlanta has listened to for many years. The control of his voice is wonderful and his description of the Alpine Bugle call was beautiful in the extreme. The perillous climbing of the great Matterhorn was so graphic and thrilling that many in the audience unconsciously caught hold of the chairs as if climbing the mountain themselves. Dr. May was a new man to the South, but he will always be a welcome friend now.
Auburn, (Neb.,) W. H. Gardner, Supt. City Schools, Sec'y Lecture Course.
The best lecture we have heard for a long time was Dr. May's lecture
ON IRELAND
, delivered at the new opera house, Dec. 7th, being the second number in the High School lecture course. We expected a first class lecture and we were not disappointed. We commend him to those wishing a
STRONG
lecture,
ENTERTAINING FROM BEGINNING TO CLOSE
.
Waterloo, (Ia.,) Courier.
The Doctor is possessed of
RARE DESCRIPTIVE POWERS
and tells what he saw in a manner that is both entertaining and instructive. His apt quotations of bits of poetry, given with rare elocutionary power, added much to the lecture and his strong arraignment of the absentee landlord system and its effects on the poverty stricken peasantry of Ireland was eloquent and stirring.
La Porte, (Ind.,) Herald.
The audience was both delighted and awed with the
MAGNIFICENT DESCRIPTIONS
given by the doctor of his wonderful experiences. One must hear him to fully appreciate the story of his travels. He entertains and instructs to a remarkable degree.
Dubuque, (Ia.,) Daily Herald.
His description of the various points of interest in the
Yosemite
was something
SUCH AS WAS NEVER BEFORE HEARD
in Dubuque.
HIS HEARERS WERE THRILLED
and would have sat an hour longer had the speaker continued. Mr. May has a fine voice and is a finished elocutionist.
Atlanta, (Ga.,) Alkahest.
One of the
TRUEST SUCCESSES
of the season has been the introduction of Dr. Eugene May to the South through the Alkahest Lyceum Bureau. He came as a stranger to most but left full audiences of friends at every date. His unassuming, genuine, gentlemanly merit is an inspiration among the host of egotistic lighter platform professionals.
Oxford. (Ga.,) Emery College Phoenix.
His lecture on the
PASSION PLAY
was a
MAGNIFICENT EFFORT
; in language it was eloquent, in oratory superb; in description masterful and graphic.
Edgefield, (S. C.,) Chronicle.
Dr. May's subject was the
PASSION PLAY
of Oberamargau. We have seen the play with our own eyes and studied it closely. Dr. May did justice to the subject, and magnificently too. As we listened I said, Here is a great hearted, sunny-souled,
SILVER-TONGUED ORATOR
sent to cheer and brighten and sweeten this old world.
Eufala, (Ala.,) Daily.
From beginning to end the lecture was a gem. His descriptions were fascinating. So delighted were the Eufalans that Dr. May has been
URGED TO RETURN
and give another lecture at an early date.
Louisville, (Ky.,) Dispatch.
He has splendid descriptive powers, a pleasing and impressive delivery, and his
ABILITY TO PICTURE SCENES IS REALLY WONDERFUL
.
Norfolk, (Va.,) Virginian.
It was a
MAGNIFICENT LECTURE
. Dr. May has traveled everywhere and seen everything and he has the knack of imparting a vast amount of information in a most agreeable way. His lectures abound in poetic word pictures, graphic descriptions of wonderful scenes, quaint bits of humor, a moral here and there, in fact a
DELIGHTFUL MIXTURE
of rhetorical good things.
Dunkirk, (N. Y.) Herald.
Dr. Eugene May delivered his
NEW AND MAGNIFICENT LECTURE
at Academy Hall last evening. He was greeted by such an audience as any speaker would be proud to have the honor to address. In Dr. May the audience was not dissapointed. His diction is clear, pure and elegant, while his
DESCRIPTIVE POWERS ARE SIMPLY MARVELOUS
.
