Father Henry B. Tierney
Poet-Priest and Lecturer
HAVING attracted the attention of two continents with his poems FATHER HENRY B. TIERNEY, the Poet-Priest, scarcely needs words of introduction to the American people. He has a National reputation among our Catholic and non-Catholic population as an orator of surpassing eloquence. He now announces a new lecture, "Shams and Hypocrites" which has been pronounced, "a whirl-wind of powerful oratory." Father Tierney is not only one of the greatest living Catholic poets, but is an orator and lecturer who will stir the nation with his two new lectures:
"SHAMS AND HYPOCRITES"
"MEDICINE OF THE SOUL"
Father Tierney wins a place in the hearts of all his hearers, by his wonderful literary talent and his easy flow of modern eloquence. On account of his duties as a busy parish priest his lecture engagements are necessarily limited.
It is with great enthusiasm that we now announce this Poet- Orator to the Lyceum Public.
Descriptive
"SHAMS AND HYPOCRITES" is a constructive lecture and besides flay¬ing hyprocrites and puncturing the shams of the day, proclaims in no uncertain lan¬guage the powers of man's unconquerable soul and the means necessary for living the philosophy of self culture which makes each individual every inch a man. "Sham and Hyprocrites" is an inspiring appeal for the full development of the wonderful powers of man. The lecture sounds in clear convincing language the death knell of "Shams and Hypocrites." It is an eloquent appeal for sincerity of all phases of human life. The lecture is absolutely unique and will haunt your mind and stir your heart every day of your life until you live its inspiring prin¬ciples.
"MEDICINE OF THE SOUL" is a lecture of the psychic and occult, includ¬ing Mental Healing, Christian Science, Suggestive Therapeutics, Hypnotism, Ani¬mal Magnetism, Telepathy, The Emmanuel Movement, The New Metaphysics, New Thought, etc. Father Tierney has been a deep student of the occult for years and has contributed valuable articles on the subject to the leading periodicals. The lecture traces the history of this extraordinary movement, its nature, vogue, prac-tical value and probable future. "Medicine of the Soul" is a lecture for the masses on a theme of great interest.
Dear Father Tierney: I received your letter and the very beautiful Christ¬mas Carol. I have also another poem of yours which will appear in the Christmas number of the Extension Magazine. I like the beautiful spirit of everything you write.
Faithfullv yours,
" FATHER FRANCIS C. KELLY, Pres. Catholic Church Extension Society,
Chicago.
We are publishing herewith three poems by Rev. Father H. B. Tierney, Rector of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The first one, "The Heart of God" was printed in the Easter number of the Independent. A peculiar circumstance in con¬nection with it also is that while breathing Catholic devotion in every line, it has been eagerly accepted by the publishers of a magazine of strictly Protestant lean¬ing and the publishers have requested Father Tierney to furnish more in the same vein. The second, "Ave Maria" appears in "The Lamp" one of the most promi¬nent Episcopalian organs, the American edition of which is printed in New York. The third poem, "Adam and Eve" was published by the "Bystander," an English periodical that has given publicity to several of the young priest's poems before. —Trenton, (Mo.) Republican.
The Press
The large Chautauqua audience was well pleased with Father Tierney's lec¬ture, "Shams and Hypocrites."—St. Joseph, (Mo.) News-Press.
"Shams and Hypocrites" was the most terrible, the most praiseworthy lecture delivered in St. Joseph for years.—St. Joseph, (Mo.) Gazette.
But the lecture itself, a masterpiece of lingering eloquence, is the most as¬tounding message we have ever heard from the lips of a Catholic priest. The strange power of the priesthood only intensifies and dignifies the telling effect of this strange poet-orator on the minds and hearts of his hearers. The words of the priest linger in the minds of the hearers long after they have bid him farewell whom they have never seen before. What is the strange secret of this eloquent young man's power for good? It is sincerity, the true eloquence of the great. —Louisville, (Ky.) Courier-Journal.
Rev. H. B. Tierney, the young American poet-priest who has won such an un¬usual audience in Europe, especially in England with his beautiful virile poetry of flower and passion, is also a lecturer of exceeding power for a man under forty. "Shams and Hypocrites" will no doubt greatly please his American hearers. Its bold eloquence is typically American and the message is a compelling appeal of man to man. Father Tierney should have called his lecture, "Man Unconquer¬able."—Criticism of Manuscript by Justin McCarthy of London Times.
Perhaps the most promising Catholic poet of America is Father Henry B. Tierney, whose original work is recognized in England and America. Father Tierney is also an orator of note, his two lectures, "Shams and Hypocrites" and "Medicine of the Soul" having been heard with great praise in this country.—New York Independent.
Sunday, the Rev. Henry B. Tierney will give two addresses which will close the Chautauqua. It seems fitting that the concluding lecture of St. James Chau¬tauqua should be given by Rev. Henry B. Tierney, well known in St. Joseph, his natal city. There are few young clergymen in the state who have attained so much prominence as Father Tierney, whose literary ability has won him recognition, not only in America but in Europe too, many of his poetic contributions finding a place in well known English and Roman periodicals. Although a favorite in St. Joseph, Father Tierney does not appear frequently in local platforms, and the announcement that he will speak tomorrow night will be pleasing news to all those who appreciate his splendid literary talent.—St. Joseph, (Mo.) Gazette.
