Bishop Samuel Fallows
WE CALL special attention to the announcement that the Right Rev Samuel Fallows, D. D , LL. D., who has been much sought after and hitherto unavailable to the general lecture field, will accept a few engagements through the management of this Bureau. The position of this eminent divine does not require eulogies to convince the general public of his great worth. His unusual versatility and unbounded power of pleasing, instructing and entertaining have brought to him many spontaneous encomiums of which a few are embodied herewith
Bishop Fallows was the Valedictorian of his class at the University of Wisconsin. He has been Regent of the Uni-versity, Professor, State Superintendent of Public Instruc¬tion of Wisconsin ; University President and Chairman of the World's Educational Congress, Columbian Exposition. A lecture of great power and beauty of thought. Moncton (N. B.) Times.
Bishop Fallows' lecture was a masterpiece and of rare power, one which will pass current among the gems of the most brilliant of American platform speakers and orators.
St. John (N. B.) News.
Bishop Fallows had a large and intelligent audience in the Institute last evening. He was frequently ap¬plauded, and his ringing peroration was greeted with hearty and prolonged clapping of hands.
Santa Monica (Cal.) Daily Outing.
The finest lecture ever delivered in Southern Cali¬fornia.
Belleville (Can.) Daily Intelligencer.
A very striking personality, indeed, has the Right Rev. Bishop Fallows, of Chicago, Presiding Bishop of the Reformed Episcopal Church. There is no exaggeration in saying that those who heard the eloquent and wonder¬fully magnetic preacher yesterday will have a new standard to make com¬parisons by after this. The Bishop's delivery seems to suggest aggressive¬ness and withal a sort of militant hu¬mility, what one might have expected in a Crusader of olden time. His appearance—well, if you saw Henry Irving, the great actor, with a bishop's canonicals on you would know at once who Bishop Fallows reminded you of. Oconomowoc (Wis.) Badger.
To review it would be to write a book. To speak of its beauties and truths would be to print the entire lecture. Madison (Wis.) Democrat.
.The lecture was of high order, full of weighty truths and profound thoughts. The speaker has a pleasant voice, and a command of clear and forcible words. Mason City (Iowa) Journal.
The fourth lecture by Dr. Samuel Fallows was a most brilliant effort. From the moment he took his position on the rostrum until the conclusion of his lecture he held the entire attention of his audience, who were alternately serious and mirthful. Chatham (N. B.) Union Advocate.
Bishop Fallows delivered his popular lecture on Monday night, to a packed house, in the Masonic Hall (the largest place that could be found in the town). Every available place was occupied, and, as the burning words fell from the lips of the eloquent orator, the entranced throng were silent with listening, or loud in applause.
Atlanta Correspondent of Episcopal Recorder
Bishop Fallows delivered his great lecture to a very large audience, including judges of the Supreme Court, several distinguished divines of the different churches, and many prominent professional men. This fine effort added still more to the Bishop's already enviable reputation as a pulpit orator of rare eloquence and marked ability.
OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.
Newark (N. J.) Register.
The lecture was intently listened to throughout by the enthusiastic audience which greeted the learned bishop, and at the close a round of hearty applause greeted this favorite lecturer and great preacher.
Hamilton (Ontario) Spectator.
The lecture was most instructive, impressive, elo¬quent, and, at the same time, racy and humorous. The lecture was adorned by some magnificent bursts of elo¬quence which led the audience to forget the sacredness of the building and burst into thunderous applause.
Madison (Wis.) Journal.
It was very eloquent and scholarly in diction, liberal in tone, and abounded in apt illustrations, and was listened to with lively interest.
Atlanta (Ga.) Correspondent of the Savanah
News.
In a powerful and eloquent manner Bishop Fallows presented his theme. The lecture produced a marked influence on the audience, among which were many of the ablest divines and brightest intellects in the State.
St. John (N. B.) Daily News.
Rt. Rev. Bishop Fallows delivered his great lecture in Victoria Hall to a large and attentive audience. The chairman, the Stipendiary magistrate, said he would be justified in thanking the learned lecturer, without the usual formula. They had listened to many eminent lecturers in Sussex, since the completion of this beautiful hall, but he was sure none had pleased so well as Bishop Fallows.
Ottawa (Canada) Free Press.
The audience, numbering several hundred persons, was a highly intelligent one, to hear Bishop Fallows' lecture, and all thoroughly enjoyed the literary treat. Bishop Fallows is a most forcible speaker, his periods flow with remarkable smoothness and his argument throughout is couched in the most beautiful language. The vein of humor which ran through the whole lecture lent an additional charm to the Bishop's eloquence.
Atlanta (Ga.) Constitution.
At an early hour the Central Presbyterian Church was crowded to hear the promised lecture of Bishop Sam'l Fallows, D. D. The effort was masterly throughout, polished in diction, graphic in description and elevated in thought. The peroration was very eloquent. Here and there, among the strong and polished periods, shone the brighter gleam of the silver shafts of wit.
Indianapolis Dally Sentinel.
Bishop Fallows' lecture was one of the most fin¬ished and scholarly ever delivered in this city. Nearly 500 tickets were sold before the day of the lecture. In person Bishop Fallows is tall and finely formed; his face shows the student; his manner is magnetic; his voice clear and resonant; his delivery clear and fervid, while his diction, pure to a remarkable degree, is rounded and finished with the most striking ex¬pression.
Ottawa (Canada) Correspondent of the Epis¬copal Recorder, Philadelphia.
Bishop Fallows delivered an admirable lecture to a large and intelligent audience. The Hon. David Christie, Speaker of the Senate of Canada, presided. The lecture was listened to with the most profound attention throughout, and was frequently applauded. At its conclusion a vote of thanks was moved by Senator McDonald, of Victoria, B. C, seconded by Senator Vidal, and adopted unanimously. The Hon. Mr. Speaker, Christie, requested that in acknowledg¬ment of the excellence of the lecture the vote should be a rising one, which was so given amid applause. The local journals justly characterize the lecture as a brilliant effort.
Cincinnati Enquirer.
At the banquet of the Army of the Tennessee Bishop Fallows was the orator of the evening. He took the boys by storm. In fact it was "a charge," sympathetic, patriotic, eloquent, just and good. It was the peroration of the grandest reunion the society has ever held. The applause that greeted him was terrific. The ovation he received was tremendous. General Sherman in introducing him said: "I present to you General Fallows, Bishop Fallows, just as you please. I know that he was brave and gallant in war. I know that he is eloquent in peace." At the close of the address and of the exercises the General said that he had never witnessed such enthusiasm before.
